Ever since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the guild system and taxes and tariffs had slowly been destroyed by pogress in technology and the development of the working class. A potato blight caused a famine in northern Europe, commonly represented with the Irish Potato Famine, was causing anger within the lower classes and ever sinc the French Revolution, liberal ideas had been growing in the "Old World". Socialism, Republicanism and Nationalism The first revolt was in Sicily, against the Bourbon rule. It would not be the last.
