I pretty much steamrolled this game (ftp) with archer commander, mithridates, vercingetorix, anthony, pompey, arminius, and cleopatra. Decisive battles are also quite straightforward except for the naval battles. For the sicily decisive battles alone, I purchased agrippa. Any other must have navy generals out there?

Does anyone know how unit initive/order of play is determined? Or why units are beyond brain dead at times doing things like running from confermed kills to certain death or just moving away from objectives to stand in the middle of nowhere for 2 or 3 rounds?

One thing I noticed was that both sides attack the enemy general units stubbornly. It’s like the game is trying to not let you use your generals in the later battles.

I see it as an attempt to eliminate your best general. Quite a logical approach if you ask me

there are things that i hate the most with decisive battle. i'm fine with the auto-battle (even though the ai tends to make stupid move or move but doesn't even attack at all while the enemy unit is within range of attack), but the worst thing the devs added to this mode is to randomly disable your generals! i remembered on the Decisive Battle of Caesar Civil War (Pompey side) in the final battle the game disabled 4 of 7 general i had. But apparently the disables is randomized and things can be different if we use the restart button, but gosh it so unfair sometimes.

I think this is because our units "lock on" to certain targets and give priority to attacking them. If they can't reach this specific target because of inferior movement or because friendly units are blocking the way, the unit prefers to not move and attack rather then switch to another target. In my observations this happens mostly to archer generals and they have the lowest movement and start behind the front lines. Antony rarely decided to be inactive - he rather rushes forward and gets himself killed.
So you can rearrange your units to avoid "traffic jams" and/or make them (especially cavalry generals) stronger so they can cut through the front line and allow the rest of your team to access the enemy from the rear.

Why is the AI dumb as sh1t My generals always decided to attack that 1 hp enemy when there's a normal troop that can attack it Also my generals always decided to move straight into the middle of the enemy forces Fix this shiity AI, or just let the players play it by themself smh
