I've heard there are Safavids in this game. Is that true? If so do I need any DLCs for it? Safavids are my favourite Persian Dynasty after the Achaemenid and maybe Afsharid

Prefer EU4 but this seems fun. Is it more complicated than EU4? That kinda depends... I've experienced both, I would say that Civ and EU4 is easier in different areas. Civ definitely has an easier combat engine optimization than EU4 (this part of EU4 really do have a weak spot in land battles). Just watch out for the AI's "carpet of doom" swarming all over you. (Go easy on the difficulty level at first, you will be fine). If you're very used to EU4, then the economics of Civ5 will feel so weird and messed up to you. The scientific research vs culture growth will be probably a bit of a puzzle for you too. It's going take time getting used to it. Imho, it's harder getting used to EU4 when I had been playing Civ3 so much. I still hate the lame combat system in EU4 so heavily dependant on luck in comparison to Civ3 or Civ4 or Civ5. Mind you, some people complain about the RNG in Civ games, but they don't know how to manipulate the factors which is far easier to do than in EU4 which is more restricting and difficult to pull off. Beyond playing easier levels of difficulty in Civ... once you really do move up higher, you will realize how extremely important it is to proceed almost perfectly in the early settling phase (REX phase - Rapid EXpansion phase), and why a granary is very powerful in the hands of a veteran player. In short - for you, Civ is going to be easy if you master the scientific research, economics, and of course the REX, then you will be fine. I suspect you will miss the diplomatic side of EU4 the most tho. Civ has its own style of *cough* diplomacy. But at least it's hilarious pretty often (especially in older games).

Persia is in the game under Darius (or something like that). I know know if he's Safavid though as I know next to nothing about Persia.

According to Wikipedia Darius the first was the ruler of the Archaemenid empire not the safavid, so no there should be no safavid empire.
