I was just wondering, as a free to play general, I was wondering what 4 generals or princesses should I use. I already have Scharnhorst, but that it.

Plan just for 3 generals, (Princess) the fourth slot will be for temporary trainer and can not be planned untill you want to close the game.
I use Arnold to get the princess.
Berthier is completly crap for 4500🎖️+Extra items - you get +3 DMG - geography is nice at the start later practical useless for a top general (6hex only with light or heavy cavalary) Fence is even not a cavalary skill!

What is a trainer, and I'm not sure, but are you saying I should get 3 generals, and save my fourth slot for a princess.

If you ask me: No generals, just princess: try to learn the tactics in IE and Coalition missions. When you're around 100-150/420 campaign progress and the campaigns become hard, you start some conquests to get the princess. Scharnorst helps, the first princess you get is Sophia. Scharnhorst as example has a Artillery Trainer skill. When you 'regroup' a trainer the general that recieves his experience (less 20%) will gain one extra star (for artillery with Scharnhorst's artillery trainer) Have a look at littlecorporal's: free to play - no grinding path - the game is really playerfriendly
