My question is, what buff does combat and the generals respective artillery/infantry/cavalry/ship ability give? i bought a flintlock pistol in shop but I want to know exactly what buffs do increasing combat ability give, since I could also change the item for another ambulance.

Ability numbers (say, your John's battle ability is 40), can be converted into percents by dividing the number by four. In this case, the battle ability would give a 10% buff. Battle ability (or combat ability as you call it) affects all units. John is an artillery general. If he was placed on ANY unit, they would be able to get that 10% bonus in attack. Now, a unit ability's conversion rate is the same. If we use the same system, John would have a 10% boost on his unit, artillery, and only his unit. Best way I can say it is remember to divide the stat by 4 and if there is a remainder,/decimal get rid of it. Stat on top? Works on any unit. Stat on the bottom? Works on a specific unit. Best way to know what kind of unit? Read the name.
