IMO, this is doable even with numerous strategic and tactical mistakes. If you can perfectly clear Battle of Iwo Jima, you can perfectly clear Battle of Okinawa.
I lost KV-6 Monty and Tassingy before or around Turn 8 / 32, MacArthur, KV-2 Patton and Katyusha Govorov by Turn 16/32 and Arnold by Turn 22 / 32.
I had also moved my ships, except my carriers, to circle Okinawa from the south before sending them westward and northward, thus crippling my naval ability when challenging Ozawa.
I perfectly cleared it on my first run with Arnold as my only admiral / air gen.
Tech lvl: 6-6-6-4-6.
Gens used: MacArthur and Tassingy (starting 82nd Airborne), Monty (KV-6), Govorov (Katyusha), Arnold (starting carrier) as well as Patton (heavy tank Reinforcement).
Reinforcements bought in order: 3X Torpedo bombers, two sets of 3X 82nd Airborne, one 2X heavy arty, one 2X arty, 1X heavy tank, one carrier, one sub and 3X inf.
Do not panic! The map expands twice.
You're tasked with clearing out Naha and the surrounding areas first.
Afterwards, you'll assist Halsey with taking out the southernmost part of the main island.
Lastly, you'll need to rush northward to take out Ozawa and the remaining troops.
Phase 1: Battle of Naha - Defeat Ushijima by Turn 6!
Land your paratroopers behind the observable coastal arty and take him out. Buy both 82nd Airborne and send them in.
The goal is to clear the sea for your allies to pass through relatively clearly and allow your heavy troops to land safely.
Your heavy troops should remain out of range of enemy fire, but close enough to rush in and land.
At the same time, focus fire on the ship. This will free the port for your heavy troops to land.
Land one Reinforcement on the Radar to observe the surrounding area. You can move him into the airfield and drop him back onto the same radar.
The other will attack the heavy arty by Naha.
Coincidentally, since the city was wide open, MacArthur took it.
When Ushijima is defeated, the map will expand for the first time.
Ushijima apparently circles around to the airport and hit the Radar area.
Beware his tanks! They almost took out my Monty in one turn.
Phase 2: Halsey's Surprise - Defeat 30 units by Turn 12!
Split your forces up. Send your heavy troops in different directions, using the river by Naha as the boundary.
From Naha, head south with your fleet.
I bought a Reinforcement sub and carrier to assist.
Hit the SW city. Make sure to take out the coastal fort.
Beware! The nearby enemy forces are fierce! There might be an inf rush when the city falls.
From the eastern city, assist Kreuger's and Halsey's landing.
The coastal fort to the east was open when I approached it. Use it to sink the ship.
At the same time, clear the area of Ushijima's remaining troops.
Beware the enemy forces in Kreuger's landing zone! The inf alone almost took out Patton on a heavy tank in one Turn.
Note: Keep a look out on your secondary objective! Finish the weakest ones off if you need to stack it up rapidly in the shortest time possible.
Note: If you clear out the southern garrison quickly, Ozawa's expansion should take place earlier.
Phase 3: Ozawa's last stand - Defeat the man himself by Turn 18!
Upon wiping out the defenders on the mainland to the south, the map expands one last time.
When you realise that the city south of Naha and its surround areas has been cleared, move your fleet and the troops there northward.
Take Halsey's target cities. Beware the troops from the nearby island!
Take care to watch out for the nearby ships' fire!
The troops around Kreuger's landing strip will fall in danger immediately. At least one ship to the east, army groups to the north of both cities close in and potentially enemy reinforcements to assist the nearby groups join in.
If you didn't destroy the coastal fort, use it now to ward off the enemy ships.
If and when Ozawa sails out to confront Nimitz's tiny fleet, hit him with all 3 Torpedo Bomber Reinforcements at once.
If you're lucky, Nimitz should defeat Ozawa. The Japanese admiral will retreat, but shouldn't have the space to recover in a port simply because there are too many nearby ships. However, it is best to hit him with everything you've got once he emerges.
Beware the presence of enemy army groups! Advance in groups and make sure to use radars or Scouts to look ahead.
Defeating the carrier docked at the island's port summons reinforcements.
Assist your allies by clearing out the coastal forts, as usual. Note: there may be AA inf stationed right beside the forts' garrisons.
Wipe out the remaining enemies.
Seize the airports for greater efficiency. I used MacArthur as an air gen since Arnold was not available.
Note: The sub Reinforcement was almost useless this time because I deployed it too late (right before or after the last expansion).
Buy a 3X Fighter or 1X heavy arty instead. The former is good for sniping at Ozawa while your fleet catches up.
Note: If you bought an admiral, you will not need to pay the full 120 Cash for the carrier as I did. You might just be able to afford the Fighters at 40 Cash even with the purchase of the sub.
