No Time, No Troops, No Money
But that matters not when you got Family
Welcome Commander, to Operation Cobra. It's a nasty mission, not as nasty as the one after this called Overlord, but nasty nonetheless.
By the end of this guide, you should be able to
Let's start!
Mission Objectives
Main: Occupy 4 Key Areas
Sub 1: Occupy Rennes in 6 turns
Sub 2: Occupy Nantes in 10 turns
Sub 3: Occupy Le Mans in 18 turns
Generals Used: MacArthur (Infantry), Vasilevsky (Infantry), Patton (Medium Tank), Montgomery (Heavy Tank), Rokossovky (Heavy Tank), Govorov (Heavy Artillery)
Possible Alternatives: Chuikov (Heavy Artillery), Timoshenko (Heavy Tank)
Battle Flow Brief
Grey circle at Rennes: Rundstedt
Black Circle at Nantes: Model
Overall Strategy: Keep MacArthur alive to absorb damage while outranging enemies with fire and rockets of doom
Side note 1: Speed is of importance to occupy Rennes and Nantes in time.
Side note 2: The British Swarm will take Le Mans within 18 turns, and if you help them, they'll do it even faster
Place Monty/Roko on the Heavy Tank and load a KV6 on it. Stack MacArthur up and use special forces to break through the blockade. Patton goes on the Medium tank, and Vasilevsky on the next infantry if applicable.
Charge the Blockade with everything you've got, including the cruiser.
After clearing the Blockade, the Americans will appear to attack towards the left. At the same time, after Montgomery takes Caen, enemy troops surrounding the middle town will move upwards to counterattack. If your heavy tank is in a position to help out like mine, don't hesitate and give the enemy infantry a few good shots of fire.
Every shot helps your zombie allies survive a bit longer to take Le Mans
If you're confident in holding the town with a secondary infantry general like I am, you can take the town and park yourself there. Beware though, Kluge will lead a force of paratroops and drop on the town the instant you take it. It was originally meant for the British, but tanking it helps them greatly. I would advice getting an AA force ready, to break up their landing positions and preventing a morale drop.
If you're running short on time, don't take the town, just roll down to attack Rundstedt at Rennes
Remember: Play for the objective.
Move your KV6 to a good spot where it can hit the city directly to maximise damage
After taking Rennes, purchase another Heavy tank and Heavy Artillery and move down to attack Nantes.
Once again, if you have time or shots to spare, there'll be a small force of tanks heading to counterattack the middle town where Kluge landed.
Loaning them your KV6 would help the British greatly, but at a higher risk since Nantes is slightly further and might take 2-3 turns to reach.
It's not unusual to reach Model sitting on his double stacked Maus at turn 8 and regret life. For previous plays, I sacrificed my secondary Heavy tank with Timonshenko / Rokossovsky to appease Model.
One method is to fire on the city itself, ignore attacking Model directly and roll into the city with MacArthur.
Another method is focus on Model to trigger a morale drop for surrounding units before charging the city, though this takes slightly longer.
After taking the city, there'll be several counterattacks from both towns on the left and right. However, the morale drop makes it easy to repel them.
Hold the area and take the chance to stack your KV6.
Move your Katyusha out to attack Le Mans, purchasing several reinforcements along the way if needed. This is because Le Mans if guarded by a double stacked Heavy Tank. If you hadn't supported the British against Kluge or any other counterattacks, they may not have enough forces to take Le Mans.
At turn 11, you'll get several reinforcements at the starting point. Use them to reclaim the nearby cities to secure your income before joining up with the British swarm attacking Le Mans.
This would be what the British forces look like after I handled Kluge and his band of paratroopers for them.
They look like they're about to die.
If you didn't support them at all, they're most probably already dead. (x _ x;)
Omae wa mou shindeiru.
After fending off the counterattacks at Nantes and stacking your infantry, make your way to the last coastal town. It's lightly defended, so a KV6 and several infantry with MacArthur would be able to handle it.
The troops defending will move to meet you, so if you're fast enough...
Congratulations, you've reached the end of this briefing!
I hope this helps you achieve your perfect clear.
Final notes: The lack of sufficient money was a serious pain. Try to conserve your tanks as much as possible and don't charge them into conflict. If your infantry can handle it, let them. Infantry is more versatile and cheaper to recruit. Save your tanks for the final showdown with Model. Your katyusha will be very useful against Model, so please remember to purchase it.
My tech level and special forces are all maxed, so your experience may differ from mine.
If you still have troubles, or used a different method, feel free to discuss!
