As of the latest update, these are the 3 best infantry generals. I am excluding Spartacus because he's obviously the best infantry with his banner+skills. In assessing their usefulness, here are the criteria i used in judging their performance in the game:
1. skills
-the most important skills for infantry is infantry commander and shield wall, so having both or atleast 1 gives a high score
2. stats
-not as important, but giving +40 atk to infantry is better than +34 atk. Decent score for giving atk to navy is also considered.
3. Talent
-The more consistent the talent, the better. The 3 infantry gens here admittedly don't have the best talents, although they are all good and are a net positive.
4. Current items
-not that important, although banners have an effect
5. Game mode
-Campaigns and Decisive battles are weighed more compared to conquests
Honorable mentions:
Ambiorix
-carried by his talent
-cheap cost for early game
Ambiorix is a good infantry general for early game, and can be really strong end game given the right items, though i doubt players will be giving their best items to him. Siege is good for campaigns and conquest, as the faster you destroy cities, the faster you can take them. He's held back by only giving 23 atk to infantry. Pick him early on if you are in desperate need of a competent infantry general, and you can sell him later if need be.
Crassus
-march, siege and tunnel. Made for swift capture of cities
-can be used in cavalry due to skills not infantry focused, and can give 28 atk to cavalry
Crassus seems to be a skill or 2 from being in the list. If he had infantry commander, he would've made the list. Sadly, his lack of infantry commander to take advantage of his sieging skills keeps him away from top 3, that and as infantry, he doesn't have any real way to mitigate damage, and his talent is wasted, as even tho crits are nice, his main use is to siege lone unprotected cities or defended by auxillaries, as him attacking heavily defended ones chips his hp too quickly. That, and he can't take advantage of his crit by lacking either roar for more consistent crits, or infantry commander for the double crits with items. You can give him the banner of Jupiter to improve him, tho even with that he falls short from top 3.
Bato
-discount Vercingetorix
Top 3 best infantry generals(Excluding Spartacus).
3. Vercingetorix
- easy +40 atk to infantry
- shield wall+ambush makes him quite tanky, making him one of the last man standing in Decisive battles, and great for holding out major cities in campaigns
-Roar is a great bonus, coupled with his talent, means that his damage output will be consistent through out.
-Sexy beard
I was debating on which should be top 3,top 2 and top 1, as all of them have arguments to being top 1, but i decided to put Vercingetorix the lowest, but the difference is so small that it doesn't really matter, and their positions can be switched. That said, Vercingetorix is just great. The only thing really holding him back is the lack of infantry commander. And the reason that is big is simply because even tho infantry commander is only a 20% chance of proccing, it doesn't have any hard limit, so theoretically, you can keep wailing at the enemy until they die. It also allows for a lot of opportunities in battle, as it can allow individual infantry to solo conquer individual cities or just straight up delete high hp archer generals. Still, it's a minor problem really, as Vercingetorix has subscribed to the one punch man school of thought, meaning he only needs one good shot to send the enemy in orbit. He's also great in last man standing objectives, as even in low health, he won't disappoint and will still be dealing massive amounts of damage. Just give him the banner of Vulcan and he'll carry you in hard campaigns. He's a strong contender for top 1 based on what i have mentioned, but the next 2 have advantages that edges him out, more so for the top 1. Too bad he lost the battle of Alesia, he was a military genius, but he faced another military genius named Julius Caesar, that and Julius Caesar had Rome's backing. Thanks to this game tho, you can whack Caesar in the head using Vercingetorix, fun.
2. Labienus
-+34 atk
-infantry commander + intercept= archers crying
-the release of the Banner of Jupiter
Who? How? The og right hand man of Caesar manages to secure 2nd place , which might catch others by surprise. You look at him with his 3 skills and stats, and he doesn't look special in any way. And there is some truth to that. The thing that really made Labienus the star of the show is the release of the Banner of Jupiter. What does the Banner of Jupiter do? Basically, it increases the lvl of infantry commander, siege, plain fighting, and counter attack by 1. Labienus has 2 out of the 4, which is nice. But what really makes it a game changer is the last thing the banner gives, which is basically shield wall. Labienus was already a solid infantry general on his own before the banner, and the only reason no one was talking about him was because Pompey and Vercingetorix stole the show. If we evaluate Labienus without the banner, he's still really solid as an infantry general, and is probably still top 3, just behind Pompey and Vercingetorix. With the banner, he becomes a new and improved general. Infantry commander gives him the ability to attack twice , add that to intercept and archers won't be having a good day. To add insult to injury, when they counter attack, there's a 1/4 chance he procs shield wall, and even if it fails, there's his talent that has a 15% chance to increase his defense by 100. His talent isn't the best when placed in light infantry or something, but the only time you place generals in low ranked units is due to being forced into it, or you're doing a minturn in conquest. If placed in heavy infantry, he'll be shrugging off attacks once it procs. You can even give him the shield of thunder for more tankiness. With the new banner, along with Vercingetorix and Pompey, will usually be the last man standing provided he isn't focus fired, and even if he is, aslong as you put him in high hp infantry and give him items that increase health, he'll pretty much shrug off the majority of those hits, and you might be lucky enough to see a cavalry commander hit him with single digit damage. Like Pompey, he is versatile, but he gives up mobility for more consistent defense and offense. And the funny thing is, Pompey and Labienus is really similar, so similar in fact that the only real difference overall is that Pompey has March and that Labienus has Intercept, and of course their talents. I actually debated putting Labienus in top 1, tho i realized just how good March is in all game modes, although it can backfire at times in Decisive battles. I also put more weight on it than on their talents, as even tho Labienus has a better suited talent, it's not overwhelmingly good, and the strategic importance of march trumps 15% chance of increasing defense to 100% and 20 flat damage to archers. And even tho Labienus costs lower than Pompey and Vercingetorix, you would need a lot of gemstones to get him his own shieldwall. So yeah, as much i want to put Labienus in top 1, he sadly misses the mark. Great general, and in real life, one must commend his loyalty to the ideals of the Republic, to the point of betraying one of his closest friends for it. Anyway, already spoiled who top 1 is, which should be obvious to some.
1. Pompey
- +34 atk
- Infantry commander+shield wall+ march = good maneuverability and survivability, great for taking cities
- +28 atk to navy
Just comparing both Pompey and Vercingetorix, it seems like Vercingetorix is the better general in paper. But what makes Pompey edge him out a bit is the combination of shield wall and march. The reason this is important is because in campaigns, there are a lot of instances where you need to get to places quickly to be able to capture them or defend them. Pompey is great here because of the mobility provided by march. March is quite underrated as a skill, as it provides more options to play out a campaign, tho in Decisive battles where you have no control of your units, it can be a liability in Decisive battles, but this is offset by the fact that Pompey has shield wall to protect him long enough for reinforcements to arrive.By giving him the Banner of eagle, he can gain +6 movement when marching, thus making travelling with Pompey trivial. Not only that, even if he gets stopped by the enemy on the way, shield wall guarantees that he won't die easily, unless you get really unlucky and the gods decided that Pompey must die, like in Egypt. Not only that, but he has infantry commander, meaning he can solo capture cities on his own without the need of forced march, tho not as consistently as cavalry of course. His talent is alright, crit chance is great, but it could've been better. He's also good in navy, which if you played the Decisive battles in the Sicilian battle, you'd know how much naval battles are there. Overall, Pompey is great in all areas and well rounded. He's a jack of all trades and a master of none. He's the best for people trying to min turn conquests, he's the best for campaigns that require a lot of travelling, and he's also great in defend the city campaigns. If only he was a bit more bold, he could've destroyed Caesar in The Battle of Dyrrhachium and the Roman Republic might've survived a bit longer.
