Hello all!
I wasn't quite sure where to create this thread, so I decided to put in the most general part of the forum.
When I was lurking on this board w/o an account, I was noticing that y'all talked about general tactics for missions as well as detailed walkthroughs/guides for the individual missions. Often throughout both Imperial Eagle, Coalition, and to some extent, the HRE campaign, I have found that attacking artillery units stationed in factories instead of generals, infantry, or other units is often the best way to ensue the survival of your generals and other units. Anytime that securing Paris or a similar city was required, I would send my generals to attack and then occupy the adjacent factories to neutralize the AI from pumping little single-width light artilleries, which had the potential to collectively put out a lot of damage per round.
This tactic (or strategy?) is especially important for missions like the Battle of Waterloo mission, where neutralizing Metz makes the rest of the mission a thousand times easier! I would love to hear y'all's input on this and if you've found something similar to be true in your own experiences.
Thanks,

Sometimes those factories can be tricky. You get sucked into building a light artillery every round to defend it. If I can flank the city general without taking the factory,I will wound the artillery. Once it's in the red, they only do a little damage. I then concentrate my fire on the city.

I go with littlecorporal's advice. Just as extention, Talking about utillity defending units without commander: I think: Defending units will not attack nearby enemies out of the utillity if these enemies can counterattack. I know: A defending unit on low health will not leave the utillity - even if AI could build directly a new utility, they stay to recover. And always in the campaign: concentrate on the objectives! If a utility has no red circle I don't spend big effort in conquering or defending it. I even offer cities or factories to pull defenders away from the nextby objective, that I need to conquer.

sohpiasimp, I agree if that's a conquest. Just look at London and Berlin. GB is pretty narrow and if you attack London, you're being hit by a fort and factory and the general there. Same with Berlin. The adjacent forts make it painful and annoying.

If I can flank the city general without taking the factory,I will wound the artillery. Once it's in the red, they only do a little damage. I then concentrate my fire on the city. Perhaps, but with a five star cav general, they can often reduce the combat effectiveness of that enemy artillery in one turn. Then, next turn, they can eliminate the artillery (and perhaps get a morale boost in the process!) and then attack the city with their free move. The AI spamming light artillery has often ruined my campaign missions. Therefore, in addition to building forts to distract enemy troops, I like to spam light artillery myself. We’ll see how it goes, right now I’m on invasion of peninsular (HRE campaign).
