I realized last night that apart from just fighting in Conquests, I could put the On War item on one of my princesses and put her on a high-level unit in one of the campaign missions that I'd already completed. Then I could ignore the mission requirements (since I already had the campaign stars) and go on a killing spree until the turn limit or some other loss trigger happened, or until I was dead.
That being said, it's important to know where those high level units are. I've found two good candidates relatively early in the coalition campaign. They are characterized by being target-rich environments with strong starting units that require no investment in time, resource accumulation or upgrading facilities. Just drop the general/princess on the unit and get cracking.
1) AUSTERLITZ.
This battle offers a starting double guards cavalry, double heavy artillery and double guards infantry. In addition, it is not particularly difficult to capture Vienna and train triple guards infantry if you want to work up an infantry general with the strongest possible unit (machine guns and armoured cars require stars to unlock and it's not worth the trouble). However, this requires some turns' work and a specific save, whereas the double guards infantry is ready to go at once.
2) TRAFALGAR.
This battle offers pure sea combat for training up your naval generals (e.g. Kate), with no interference from land-based artillery. It has a known reputation as a medal grind, and is also very useful to farm kills for academy refreshes.
ETA: Sophia has naval stars and the Spy skill, and can smack coastal artillery around pretty brutally (they count as forts, against which she is particularly strong). If you're on the last stretch of her 150/10 grind and you can comfortably take some heat in return, one might consider taking her to Copenhagen Campaign, which is just before Trafalgar.
I'd be interested in everyone's input on this. Particularly:
a) Do any earlier missions have particular strong starting units?
b) Is there any campaign mission that gives starting triple guards infantry without a general already on it?
I will update this post with answers as I find them.
SIEGE OF MANTUA (Imperial Eagle, 3rd mission) - Double siege artillery, double heavy artillery (for Sophia/Isabella) and double Grenadiers. Also has a Level 7 city (Paris) if you want to make a save of it and train triple guards infantry.
