General Luna...
A man of legendary temper
He had many enemies among the Philippine Republic including political and militarial
His temper would soon be his demise
On June 2 1899 he received 2 telegrams from the President saying that he wanted Luna to go to the newly established capital of Cabanatuan to "select a new cabinet"
The last cabinet included politicians like Felipe Buencamino and Pedro Paterno, His grudge with them would often lead to fights in the Cabinet
He then set out with 3 carriages full of Soldiers to Cabanatuan but along the way... The 2 carriages broke down near a river so he set out with only 1 of the carriages
When he arrived to Cabanatuan he found it empty
Unbeknownst to him the president had actually left Cabanatuan a few hours before and had left his personal guard 'The Kawit Battalion' Whose leader had a legendary grudge with Luna
When he entered the City center he found the Kawit battalion and insulted some of its soldiers by saying that he was improperly dressed
Finally, When he entered the Presidential office he saw... Felipe Buencamino Instead of President Aguinaldo
After a heated argument over why the president wasn't there, Luna left the office and went outside.
To his horror he saw Men of the Kawit Battalion and its Leader Captain Janolino who Luna had earlier in the year dismissed for Insubordination and failing to support an attack pointing their Bolo's(knives) and guns charged towards him.
While outside the city, Luna's aide-de-campe Captain Eduardo Rusca and Colonel Fransico Roman heard shouting and gunshots so they went inside but they too were met with gunshots, Fransico Roman would be killed while Eduardo Rusca captured and arrested
Inside the City Antonio Luna had received 30 gunshot and knife wounds but still alive and somehow fighting back with his revolver.
He then Shouted "COWARDS!!" and Janolino fired the final shot to his head and he fell to the ground
A long running legend was whispered throughout that even after Luna was apparently dead, He actually flinched and even spooked some of the Kawit Battalion soldiers showing us their cowardice
He would then be carried out of the city and buried hastily after he was killed
His officers, soldiers and remaining aide-de-camps would be relieved and Aguinaldo even sieged an entire Brigade who's commander was good friends with Luna
After his death, Both sides were confused.
Some Americans thought that Luna had ousted Aguinaldo as President but his death was official by June 8.
Investigation was made about why the assassination was made instead of who did it
Overall, The death of Antonio Luna was mysterious but no doubt the Consequences were severe
Not only did the Philippines lose a great general but they lost the only man that could have saved them from the Americans
Even American Generals were shocked at why Aguinaldo would do such thing
Many American Generals developed an Admiration for him and General James Franklin Bell said "General Luna was the only real General the Philippines had"
Aguinaldo would then be captured in 1901
Leaving Luna's Assassinators nowhere to be seen
What about you? What do you think would have happened if Luna had actually waited for his other 2 carriages full of men? Would he have actually survived? Or what would have happened if he was never assasinated?
