After people complaining about necroposting once again, I really want to discuss this hidden rule which I find very stupid. If necroposting is not allowed, then once a thread becomes old, the subject is basically locked forever unless you start a new thread and leave the original author without credit. Saltin, is this something the staff encourages not to do, or is it just a norm among members?

It's not necessarily a hard rule if done occasionally and for a meaningful reason, it's just generally speaking discouraged that's all.
Almost all forums on the net dont want necro posting, it's annoying to people because:
1)Obsolescence:Main topic discussion or part of the topic maybe completely outdated. For example a game may have received several patches that radically changed the mechanics of the game so an old thread might have content from the past that is not relevant.
2)Ghost MembersThe old thread members may no longer be active so they wont or cant respond. It tends to be very confusing to newer members who dont realize they are talking to people who wont answer them.
3)Not covering current news or tactics: old threads don't include the latest guides, news so a lot of these threads are missing critical info ect..
4)Old time stamp can leave a bad impression: so looking at really old date on threads pop up in the front page can leave the impression that the current generation of members are not creative enough to come up with their own content by starting new discussions and instead has to depend on the real old stuff that's been published eons ago.
5)Can be annoying to the original participants: For example someone giving a game advice 3 years ago at the time when a game was brand new will most likely not post the same advice today. Also people change their minds on stuff and may have a completely different perspective and views today than they did a year ago or 3 years ago ect..so it's better to open new threads so everyone starts "fresh".
Anyways you can chat about anything you want and that includes old discussions topics , just start a new thread and link that to the old thread. So in that way you are creating a new thread for the current generation of members and that new thread has a relevant link in case people want to dive in the old stuff too.
