Notes on Small Nations: Egypt 1815
GEOGRAPHY: Located on the south-eastern corner of the 1815 map, Egypt is an elongated nation taking up most of the screen-width. To the east, the Nile River delta produces numerous obstacles to the movement of even the fastest units, including those with the Geography skill.
GEOPOLITICAL: If you play Egypt, you are RED. Egypt's only land border is with the eastern half of Tripolitania, which is divided in two on this map and which is your enemy (BLUE). To the north and northwest are the physical nations of Greece, Crete, Cyprus and the eastern half of Turkey, which are all Ottoman territory (enemy, BLUE). Much further to the west are Naples (which in 1815 also controls Sicily), BLUE; the western half of Tripolitania, and Tunisia (BLACK, neutral). North of Tunisia is Sardinia (ally, RED) and west of Tunisia is Algeria (enemy, BLUE).
RESOURCES: Egypt's starting resources are Gold 80, Wrench 0, Food 500.
Unique among the lower-star nations, Egypt begins the game with a Level 7 city (Cairo). She is self-sufficient in infantry, cavalry, artillery and ship production, and I suspect there was some debate in development about whether she might not better have been a four-star nation.
Egypt's industrial capacity at Round 1 is 79 gold, 19 wrenches and 110 food, broken down as follows:
CITIES:
Cairo (7), 61 gold, 8 Wrench, 20% evasion to attack
Unnamed (1) 2 hex SW of Alexandria, 3G, 0W, 3% evasion
STABLES:
L2 halfway between Cairo and the western border (+4 gold, 6% ev)
L1 immediatelyh SW of Cairo (+2 G, 3% ev)
ARTILLERY:
Ismailia, near SE corner of map, L2 (+8 Wrench, 6% evasion)
PORTS:
Alexandria, L3 (+9 gold, +3 wrench, 9% evasion)
FORTS:
1 small fort 3 hexes from Tripolitanian border.
1 medium fort immediately west of Cairo
1 coast artillery immediately north of Cairo, on the coast.
FORCES:
Infantry: 1x double militia in the west, 1 x triple line infantry in Cairo (commanded by Mehemet A, 74/4; banner, steersman, carries +2 gunpowder; 2* in infantry, 2* in trading, 1* training). Eats 8 + 15 food/turn
Cavalry: 1 x double heavy cav in L1 stable, 1 x single light cav in L2 stable. Eats 7 + 14 food/turn
Artillery: 1 x single light artillery in Ismailia. Eats 5 food/turn.
Ships: 2 frigates, one in Alexandria and the second immediately to its west. Each eats 10 food/turn.
Total starting food consumption = 69
FARMS: Two developed (40 food/turn) and two undeveloped (15 food/turn), 110 food total generated.
Egypt is able to feed itself indefinitely at the start of the game.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: To maximize its starting facilities, Egypt must research 5 x city development at 65 gold each (325); 3 x stable development at 80 gold, 5 wrench each (240, 15); two artillery development at 60 gold, 20 wrench each (120, 40) and two farms at 40 gold each (80). Total cost 765 gold, 55 wrench (cf 79/19 round 1 potential).
Egypt has no trading station. The two nearest are in Istanbul and Rome, both of which are your enemies and also Level 7 cities.
MILITARY DEVELOPMENT: As has already been stated, Egypt can build all four of infantry, cavalry, artillery and ships with her own starting facilities. In 1815, no nation that I have yet played is permitted to build forts.
STRATEGY: If you have no princesses or generals - I suggest you take Mehemet, the artillery and one frigate for fire support, and strike immediately for Nicosia and the east of Turkey. The Turks will generate infantry from Eskisehir and the stable northeast of Izmir to try to stop you, but Nicosia (once taken) should be able to provide you with reinforcements until you can capture Eskisehir. From there, take your time in consolidating eastern Turkey, then strike out for Istanbul. The heavy cav and the other frigate should go west to defend against and then take out the eastern half of Tripolitania. You may then either take Heraklion and strike upwards into Greece or go west to finish Tripolitania and take on the Algerians (who are probably overrunning Tunisia by this time). If you go for Greece at once, the Neapolitans will send a relief force so you may wish to come west into Greece out of Istanbul and not tackle that until you are ready.
Your continental enemies are limited to France, Italy, Naples and Wallachia, the latter of which is surrounded by enemies on all sides except to its south. Naples may be a problem, but Italy and France have all of Austria, Prussia, Bavaria and (for what it's worth) Serbia between you and them, and the Russian juggernaut is your friend. If you take your time and develop your resources properly, you should be ready to tackle the heavy hitters by the time they intrude on you.
Taking Istanbul is a relatively high priority because of the flexibility this will afford your economy.
If you proceed along the African coast to Oran and go up into Spain, be aware that only the south-eastern corner of Spain is represented on this map. It is an ally, but will probably have been overrun by the French by the time you can land there, as will Sardinia.
