Okay, I have decided to ask Nhyjj about his thoughts on what I see as the best in each class, F2P. I will give each of the 6 classes plus general hybrid, morale plus unit, and Administrator. Please not that I don't have the game and am an armchair general.
Administration: Saltin. No, in this game it can be nobody else but Justinian. Absolutely fantastic, will destroy anyone who rears their head at the role. 42 points, a city buff bonus with Logistics (good) and Lobbying (WAY OP). Fantastic.
General Hybrid: Cnut. All of his skills except for one (Mellee Infantry Expert) are fantastic on all units, and despite having lackluster stats, his skills certainly make up for it, as he has one of the most broken actives in the game. In addition, he gets a free item. Great.
Morale: Who else? Jeanne d'Arc. 46 Morale points, a great Cav-Infantry despite her bad infantry stats, she has Leadership in addition to her stats, she is relatively cheap, she has +% damage on both inf and cav and has the best terrain in the game. She is basically Olga minus the Consul. Her final skill is really bad (for her, in a vacuum it is fantastic), but could be okay if you have no other better gens.
Melee Infantry: Clearly Barbarossa. He has an OP active, fantastic stats, and all of his skills except strategist are amazing. His morale will remain high due to skills, but it will also fall easily due to him being melee Infantry, which is why he loses to Joan. No need to explain any more than that.
Counter Infantry: AlfredPennysworth the Great. You get his item for free, an obvious buff, Negotiation Expert is actually really good when combined with his item (which gives him a ton of extra administration). Unlike many gens, you want to give him 2 counter Infantry (to gain the extra bonus for dmg reduction) and a strong fast cavalry (for his forced March, as counter Infantry are slow). Polearm Master is great for a counter guy, and Tunnel is obviously great for sieges. In addition, he has pretty much the best F2P Stat circle in the game, allowing him to be pretty much everything except for range, but you definitely want him on Counter Infantry.
Ranged Infantry: Edward the Black Prince. He has an amazing active skill and 2 top tier Archery skills. Swamp Fighting is bad, but it isn't enough to stop him from being fantastic and it is still a nice bonus, particularly on British maps. His final skill IS really useless, at all times. Far and away the best ranged Infantry, and almost the best ranged Cavalry if it wasn't for one general, which brings us to...
Ranged Cavalry: Easily Genghis Khan. The reason he isn't the better ranged Infantry is that Ranged Infantry have higher damage (more suitable to Edward, who wants to maximize his one-shot damage) while Ranged Cavalry have higher mobility, which Genghis wants to be able to maximize his fairly common Jungle Fighting. Anyway, he has 3 amazing skills and 2 useless ones. In addition, he has a fantastic Stat circle. Overall, I prefer Eddie, but you'll want both.
Charge Cavalry: Our man Belisarius. A fantastic Active, Plain Fighting, whatever that Crown is, and great stats. He is a born Cav Man to hit as many times as possible. Also, he's FREE. What's not to love? While some would put him on infantry, we have way more infantries than we do cavalries, so I would put him on cav once you have a good number of gens.
Melee Cavalry: Far and away my favorite option here is Edward I. His best quality, his active, allows you to trigger a guaranteed Charge (actually pretty often) on these Melee (speedy) guys, which brings in the best of both worlds. Swamp Fighting is, like I said with the other Edward, great for Britain, terrible for most other places. Cav Tactician is fantastic, and his Mobilization Expert actually is pretty good due to his amazing stats.
