the description of war gears are confusing. do they reduce the damage you take when you attack a city or increase your damage? also if you add a gear to a soldier in a battle, does the gear get used up? if so it's better to save those gears for more difficult levels

They will not save from level to level. Some war gear reduced damage revived, like the armoured cart and caltrops. Siege equipment can either ignore parts of rampart reduction (you deal more damage to defenders, or can help destroy the castle faster. The medical tents are extremely useful, always equip those. Also ballista increases overall damage which is very helpful |
