it took me a while farming mithril bars which are hard to get but i finally managed to upgrade richard's crown to level 9 which gives him the last buff (20% for charge cav). it costs a lot of bars - around 160. When i got to level 9, i realised you can upgrade past this level but it's obviously not worth it as you don't get any extra bonuses other than the +3 cav capability and damage bonus.
These bars are probably the most valuable resources in the game so don't waste them upgrading unique items unless you have the general for it. So don't upgrade the crown if you don't have richard. the whole point of these items is to get the 1st and last buff which gives a total of 30% extra damage for the specific unit.
If anyone is interested in how to farm the bars, hard general missions and the red missions in hard campaigns gives you 3 and 5 bars respectivly. you also get some from triumphs.
