For some reason, not a lot of people get basil as their starting general or don't even buy him. It's confusing because he is the best gold cav general and at the start, you are only given belisarius and aetius who are infantry generals. Charge cav units are the best units in the game because of their chance to charge (big damage) and they can counter melee infantry units well, as well as range and other cav so it's important to get a good cav general. I'll talk about basil and compare him to other gold cav generals and alfred (premium but can buy now). There are melee cav generals (e.g. roland) which i will not include because melee cav is trash compared with charge cav (lower charge chance, counters range cav - don't see much anyway in campaigns).
Basil II:
- highest cav points (42) out of all generals in the game except richard & high moral (46) so he is super specialised at cav.
- his title is king (2nd highest - amazing) which is important because you can't upgrade titles for gold generals, only premium generals.
- has great active skill (headhunting - does maximum damage in 1 round), cav skill - good, counter infantry skill (also good - it reduces damage for counter infantry rather than boost damage - so you can put 1 counter infantry in front of 2 charge cav units to protect them), plain skill - extra damage.
- There really is nothing bad to say about basil. The great thing is you can buy him now, other generals might be locked for several months.
Batu khan:
- good cav points (39), good moral, great title (king)
- good skills (active boosts damage, cav skill for damage, siege skill) but not specialised because there is also range skill - wasted if you using cav only which you should, don't mix cav with range because they counter different units
- compared with basil, he has less points, less specialised skills and is locked so can't buy now.
Lancelot:
- low cav points (30), ok moral, trash title (duke)
- good skills (active reduce mobility cost for attacking, cav skill, polearm skill - benefit charge cav, sword skill - wasted on charge cav but could be used on melee cav)
- compared with basil, much less points, much lower title, skills are ok but not as good as basil.
Henry 2nd of england:
- good cav points (38), good moral, good title (royal duke - below king), he also has 40 range points (good) but doesn't benefit if on cav units.
- active skill (boost ranged damage 15% - useless on cav), range skill, cav skill - boost 15% charge chance (good).
- overall, he is more of a range general than cav, he is locked but you shouldn't buy anyway.
Alfred:
- good cav points (38), good moral, trash title (baronet) - but you can upgrade title to emperor because he is premium so doesn't matter
- good active skill (reduce castle health), polearm skill - benefit charge cav, counter infantry skill (reduce damage for counter infantry) - like basil can have 1 counter infantry + 2 charge cavs.
- best thing about alfred is he has unique item (barrier of sword - free to get in viking campaign) which gives bonuses like 30% extra damage for noble cav (can unlock from shops or recruitment now). Noble cav is the 2nd best charge cav units behind templar knights so it's good he has these units. Alfred is basically the 2nd best charge cav general in the game, but should still get basil.
summary:
- basil is the best gold cav general, you should buy alfred but getting basil is also important because you need more than 1 cav general.
- even if you bought richard which i did, then you will have richard + alfred and you should still get basil as your third cav general. You can put templar cav or noble cav on basil in legend missions so he will be useful there.
