At first, i thought roland was not worth getting because of his specific units and his skills are meh, but i didn't realise his potential (more endgame unless you bought iap) until it was brought up on discord how good his unique item is. Just want to say that this doesn't change any of my other general recommendations. You should still get alfred, basil and harald before roland just because roland needs more investment in his unique item.
As well as explaining why he is good and how to use him in campaign + legend missions, i will compare him with basil.
Roland item (free to get):
- gives you cav points and damage reduction - both very useful
- mine is level 7 right now (+16% reduction and 23 cav points), it's not worth upgrading to lvl 9 (gives 20% reduction and 29 cav points) or lvl 10 (22% reduction and 32 cav points) to get the 20% extra damage for speed cav because we can't unlock speed cav yet and you will not be able to recruit speed cav in campaign. Upgrading to lvl 9 costs 75 more mithril bars than lvl 7 and mithril bars are hard to get especially if you are f2p because you don't have access to legend missions which gives you bars on hard mode. You can upgrade if you want to but you would have to buy mithril bars from shop everyday to get a good amount, they cost 15k gold each so would require some conquest grinding.
Basil vs roland comparison:
i will compare both generals at their max potential (so roland will have lvl 10 unique item), my roland in the picture is not (has only lvl 7 item) so the numbers i will be mentioning are not from his picture
- cav points: basil (70) vs roland (96) = 26 point difference
- total damage increase %: basil (19 +/- 5, 19 because 14 from king title and 5 from cav skill, can get extra 5% from plain terrain but situational) vs roland (17% +/- 5%, 17 because 12 from crowned prince and 5% cav skill, can get extra 5% damage if using melee cav but melee cav is worse than charge cav and you should just use charge cav in campaigns), so its 19% vs 17% - 2% difference
- total damage reduction %: basil (-28%, 18% from king title and 10% from lamellar armour which you get for free) vs roland (-38%, 16% from crowned prince and 22% from unique item), -38% vs -28% = 10% difference
- active skills: basil (headhunting - very strong to get maximum damage) vs roland (loot - get 20 ore per 5 rounds, good in difficult campaigns), overall headhunting is much better
Summary: Roland is stronger endgame when maxed to reach full potential but he will cost a lot more in terms of mithril bars. They both cost 2k medals. Thats why basil is better in early to mid game when you have limited mithril bars to spend. You can try to afford it by only upgrading the unique item to lvl 7 and by buying 2-3 mithril bars from shop everyday.
How to use generals most effectively: i split this into 2 parts because there is normal campaigns (you can't spawn special units and only recruit normal units from city) and legend/treasure missions (can spawn pre-made units with generals in headquarters)
Campaign: in most levels, the game will give you some melee cav as well as charge cav at the start, you should put roland on the melee cav because he would get the extra 5% damage from his sword skill. put alfred and basil on charge cav.
Legend/treasure: because of update to the game, the 30% extra damage from unique items affects all units in a group, not just a specific unit so you can mix different units and they all get the 30% damage bonus. For roland, his specific unit is speed cav so the best thing to do is to have 1 speed cav to activate the bonus and 2 noble cav if f2p or 2 templar knights if you bought richard. speed cav is melee cav which is a lot worse than charge cav because they have less charge %. templars and noble cav are the best charge cav units.
