This is the most efficient/effective pathway for f2p. This will be enough to get you through normal campaign and the first 2 hard.
1) do normal campaign to unlock belisarius and aetius for free. Aetius is strictly an infantry general, belisarius is also infantry but because you don't get any cav generals to start with, you can upgrade his title and put capability points on cav to make him a cav general.
2) buy bronze generals to help progress in campaign: diyha (infantry), stillicho (range), adil (infantry + healer), theodora (healer), antonita (can reset another generals skill - can reset heal for double heal)
3) at this stage, when you bought these bronze generals, start doing the 2 conquests to get the + 15 and +12 damage items for both infantry and cav. Put the + 15 cav item on belisarius and + 15 infantry on aetius. The 12+ infantry can be put on dihya for now. save the + 12 cav for later. Buy the + 15 range item from shop and put on stillicho
4) you now have enough medals to buy your first general, get alfred - cav general. put the + 15 cav item on alfred, and the +12 on belisarius. you can get alfred's unique item from campaign so put that on him as well and upgrade it with mithril bars. you now have 2 strong cav generals.
5) buy harald hadrada - infantry axe general. put + 15 infantry item on him from aetius and put +12 infantry on aetius from dihya. Pre-register to get 30 viking raiders, unlock viking raiders and put 3 viking raiders on harald in headquarters. You will need to upgrade harald's title using heraldly and coins - can farm from campaign. You should only spawn harald from now in campaigns (green circle). Harald's active skill makes the viking raiders charge to deal massive damage so save this for tough enemy generals.
6) buy basil - strong gold cav general, at this point you should turn belisarius into an infantry general by spending medals to reset his capability points because you have basil and alfred as cav generals.
7) buy roland - another strong cav general and cnut - strong viking infantry general, both requires you to upgrade their unique item to make them strong

First campaigns, The battle of Andrianople, for example, are easy auto-battles too. 500 coins in just several minutes are a good ratio, imo.

If you reach a stage where you know what you are doing in terms of steps and get stronger generals, you can do it in less than 5 minutes. I don't recommend gold farming at the start because the game is generous for gold, no need to repeat campaigns.

The best one available is probably Justinian. Emperor, lv 2 ranged tactician, siege master. He’s also a very powerful consul thanks to lv2 lobbyist, which pretty much lets you pacify everyone in conquests. And he’s got a bond bonus with Theodora. You need to deploy them both to get the bonus, but +2 tech can be pretty handy should you need to equip a lot of war gear very quickly (naval missions). Very expensive at 2300 medals, but he’s handy.

Also, El Cid Ruy Diaz is coming in the next update, so you may want to hold out for him...

I think that best "pure" archers are Timur and Subutai. But we don't know when they will be available.

I think that best "pure" archers are Timur and Subutai. But we don't know when they will be available. silver generals can't be the best, edward the black prince has more range points than timur when general rank, and can be upgraded to emperor unlike timur. Edward also gets a unique item which is a big boost. timur does have a better active skill tho. subutai is good as well but edward is just better. silver generals are not recommended because you can't sell them to get your medals back, so might as well just get the very best.

Or another Alfred?

Wait, I'm a bit confused here, why do you need to buy bronze gens? I finished all the campaigns till Macedon with the free gens and Alfred (who's a beast). Also who should I buy next? My friend recommended me to buy Narses to pair up with Belisarius or buy either Roland or Justinian.

My friend recommended me to buy Narses to pair up with Belisarius or buy either Roland or Justinian. some people struggle to reach macedonian dynasty so i recommend bronze generals, also the healers are useful to have anyway. Don't get justinian or narses, narses is pretty garbage and u don't need justinian now, get harald, then basil or roland, but roland needs mithril bars to upgrade his item.

I think you can just keep Belisarius as an inf gen throughout. Made it to House of Normandy with free gens (except Aiham), one to two regular unit upgrades, all available special unit upgrades, near complete gen upgrades for Belisarius and some upgrades for the other gens. Eg. Two soldier slots if within reach and one to two upgrades for unique weapons. Belisarius was a permanent inf gen throughout his career and performed well. John the Armenian was a below average, but still usable free cav gen for the most part. Plus, he is within reach. Thus, I believe that you can use Belisarius as an inf gen without sacrificing much cav potential or in-game progress. Still unable to clear / perfectly clear Battle of Ashdown, Battle of the Gates of Trajan, Battle of Brunanburh and the Hero Legends missions from Scourge of God onwards. Stuck at the Burning of Southampton.
Ignoring the fact that I have cleared numerous Conquests in totality, you should assume a good reserve of at least 600k and 2.5k medals if extremely frugal. My finances stand at 1.2 million coins and 5.2k medals with highly active playing (8h or more per day) since the first days of its release on IOS. Not a lot, but enough if using the above, but enough for one to two good investments into the Premium/Gold category as well as numerous Bronze tier gens. I actually didin't buy gens because I am unsure of who is a better pick. Didn't realise Bond compatibility was also a thing until just now. In essence, I'd argue for greater ambition in choosing gens given the relative ease early on and one's expected deep pockets.
