No pictures, sadly, unless it really does help.
Introduction:
Welcome Commanders to the Barbarian Invasion era!
The Anglo-Saxons are conquering the Britons, the two Gothic Kingdoms are launching devastating incursions into Western Rome, and various barbarian states are fighting each other.
Soon, the Huns with their massive cavalry forces will ride into Gaul.
We must ensure the survival of our state at any cost, lead our fellow Germanic people to glory and conquer our sworn enemy, Rome!
To this end, we have prepared a series of possible maneuvers that will show you why you should pick our "Hard" conquest over the "Medium" and "Hard" of the Salian Franks and Franks, respectively.
Phase 1: Survival of the fittest
We start off already at war with Rome. Fear not! We are also at war with the weak Alans who will be swiftly crushed by our forces.
The Ostrogoths have granted us passage, but our relations deteriorate. It would be wise to secure their cooperation, for now.
- Conduct research into all Foreign Affairs policies as soon as possible.
- Turn the Anglo-Saxons into allies and wait for their request for joint battle against the Britons. Accept it.
- Occasionally give gifts to the Ostrogoths to ensure that there is enough leeway within the passage segment of your relations bar.
- Potential allies: Bretons and Visgoths.
- Potential enemies: Salian Franks, Franks and Burgundians.
Phase 2: Eastern Overlord
We need to finish off the two Frankish kingdoms and Burgundy to obtain enough strength to fight. We must accomplish this as soon as possible, before the Huns arrive. Time is short, Commander.
Rome should be distracted by other barbarian states and can hardly muster a significant force to threaten you.
Be sure to have a roaming melee cav unit to capture cities opened up by the Visgoths.
You have two choices:
- War against the Franks
- War against the Burgundians
This depends on whether there is a request for joint battle, whoever dares to blackmail you or whoever seems more vulnerable.
The Franks will invade Anglo-Saxon lands while the Salian Franks and, possibly, Romans will pound the Burgundians.
Whether the two Frankish states will go to war early enough is up to luck.
Muster your main forces and surround their cities on the eve of war. Strike.
Work with your Anglo-Saxon allies to gain territory quickly. The Huns should show up very soon.
Gained positive diplomatic points, Passage or Alliance:
- Anglo-Saxons
- Bretons
- Ostrogoths
- Visgoths
At or soon to be at war:
- Rome
- Burgundians
- Franks
- Salian Franks
Conquered:
- Alans
- Britons
Phase 3: Scourge of God
The Huns matierlize on Turn 14 and the black storm sweeps across Western Rome. As a (temporary) vassal of the Huns, alongside the Ostrogoths, we must allow the Hun cavalry to pass through our lands and plunder Gaul.
However, our relations wear thin and soon, our time shall come.
Move a few units to block the Huns from entering Anglo-Saxon lands as much as possible. If the cities are open, take them.
As the Huns pass through your lands, ride their momentum and seize any opposing cities. There is no need to help your master, after all, is there? Especially when the Huns will soon turn on you.
Both Frankish kingdoms and Burgundy will fall. Gobble up as much of their lands as possible.
When your diplomatic points with the Huns have decreased close to the point of blackmail, surround the empty cities and recall your troops into your walled cities.
Once war is declared, strike.
You'll see heavy fighting along the Rhine. You must stand alone there. Try to summon the special units, War Cav and Frankish Axethrower.
Elsewhere, the Ostrogoths would have enaged the Huns, work with them.
Positive diplomatic points, Passage or Alliance:
- Bretons
- Ostrogoths
- Visgoths
- Anglo-Saxons
Enemies:
- Western Rome
- The Huns
Conquered:
- Britons
- Salian Franks
- Franks
- Alans
Phase 4: Neither Holy nor Roman
Mop up the Huns. Try to head south and gobble as much Roman territory as possible.
Remember the Visgoths? Force them to grant passage and form an alliance. You'll need their help to finish up quickly.
Move your troops towards the exposed Ostrogoth cities, especially Vienna, Budapest and cities along your southern borders.
Declare war and invade. Why? The Ostrogoths should have taken Ravenna if you took too long and you need it to achieve both a basic clear and hegemony.
Clear out the original Ostrogoth territory. It shouldn't be too hard given their concentration along the Alps.
Force the Ostrogoths to surrender if you have the resources and enough troops to handle Western Rome. If not, keep fighting as you build up your treasury.
Finish off the Ostrogoths and force Western Rome to its knees!
Congratulations, Commander! We have done it, Rome has fallen!
We have led our Germanic people to glory and founded a new empire on Rome's ashes.
We have crushed the Franks who sought to annex us, destroyed the Alans who opposed us, overthrown the Huns who tried to suppress us and conquered the Ostrogoths who tried to restrain us.
Glory to the Alemanni!
