How to do Spear of Byzantine War with Rome II. I can't take the city as the defender has 40,000 health and the help I get gets practically one-shotted. I currently have Alfred the Great, Justinian I, Aetius, and Belisarius on Legion Brigade

I currently have Alfred the Great, Justinian I, Aetius, and Belisarius on Legion Brigade this mission is hard but it can be solved by one word:FIRE,use a general or a ship war gear that could make flame like that free general from chapter 3 and dromon ship respectively |

basically just use any thing that make the enemy lose 5 - 50% of it's troops

Occupying the yellow tiles gets you reinforcements in the land and sea, the land units are pretty worthless and should only be used to damage the city once the enemy is defeated but the ships you get at the bottom are able to kill the general defending the city without any support.

The mission is simple, consistency is important. With your general, you beat the troops near the city and call for reinforcements. Don't hit the city. Dromon destroys the army in the city. Break down fortifications with siege weapons. In this order.
