I feel like I've been losing out on compasses given that the newer updates or the game itself recognises either a basic clear only, basic clear followed by achieving hegemony or hegemony only outcome. The rewards would be distributed accordingly.
At times, either luck, skill or other reasons hold players back from picking the middle option when winning as a specific belligerent for the first time. This forces us to go for the third option.
When I had finally won as Burgundy during Barbarian Invasion once, I noticed that the number of compasses owned did not increase. This further lowers the appeal of aiming for hegemony directly given that, IIRC, compasses are awarded for basic clears or the first basic clear as a specific state.
However, it takes at least ten minutes more to declare war, take the desired cities/city and return back to an alliance. Plus, if you're highly disadvantaged in terms of military size, you would need to achieve a basic clear, hold out or expand, and negotiate a truce up to an alliance.
Considering these points, what would be an ideal way of playing Conquest mode?
