I have been struggling to beat this mission for at least a week, any tips on how to do so? Generals are Alfred the Great (duh), El Cid (not fully upgraded since I just got him), Belisarius, Narses, Cnut, Roland, Simeon and freebies.

i spawned cnut and el cid on varangians, and also belisarius. you want outburst of el cid to almost oneshot 2 enemys. so put him on alfred right side. cnut skill debuff for the enemy general Most importantly: memorize the movement of the enemy, it is FIXED in the first turn, therefore equip yourself accordingly with war gear. mine was only lvl 2. turn 2 or 3 move alfred back or he dies, use 1 or 2 war drums to heal your varangian units after 1st turn or so, to keep their health up and their legion at 3 for one round longer than otherwise^^ edit: dont forget to give el cid an infantry weapon if you use him on those^^ but since you got different generals with outburst use your best accrodingly

My varangians are vastly underleved (only level 1). Maybe need a bit more grinding, as if I have not ground enough in the game.

in that case i agree. waiting and upgrading is the key. it really is one of the toughest levels for early f2p. beeing stuck for a while is quiet common in hard mode.^^

Finally, I beat it. In fact, I beat all of Alfred the Great on Hard mode. Cnut time (Varangian Guards reached Level 2 and I used like 10 drums to beat the mission)

Beat it with Cnut (Alfred's right) as well as El Cid and Alexios I (Alfred's left).
The best trick is to defeat the melee cav / cripple the melee cav and cripple the ranged enemies. When the melee cav attacks, Alfred's counterattack will defeat them. The wounded archers will move next and block Alfred off. Make sure that his anti-cav defensive war gear is switched to the anti-archer defensive war gear.
Now, your northernmost unit (Alexios in my case) can freely circle around the enemy right and defeat them. DO NOT defeat the archers. The melee enemy units remaining will attack your mobile force. Pull them back and swap them with the unit immediately to Alfred's sides if needed.
Note: You need to clear out the north first. Including the 3× vikings gen that charges your position from turn one.
You can either wait out the turn count or defeat the enemy to win.
