I have not built it right now. Should I wait until I get to discovery age before using up the literature? I've got the IAPs, Caesar, Saladin, and Barbarossa so far.

I'd say wait until you're in industrial. You wouldn't get the medals fron the rewards with an empire age team. Btw, did you just restart the game? |

Actually is a endgame feature, with 8 trial for each unit class with rewards after level 4,6 and 8. Rewards are:
- all 4 level completed 3 stars = 200 medals
- all 6 level completed 3 stars = special item
- all 8 level completed 3 stars = special badge
To reach level 4 with 3 star you will need a full team of 4-6 end-upgraded units(for each class!), To reach level 6 and 8 is almost mandatory a fully upgraded team, items and skills.
Maybe the only exception is the artillery trial where you need just 5-6 star units with average skillset and item.
So in general is almost useless to build it and play ust before the very far end of the game
