I noticed a lack of guides for the Scourge of God conquest in the Librarium Romanum, so I decided to whip up some analysis from my own conquests. For now I'll be covering only three star countries until I familiarize myself more with the conquest--I've been taking a break from the game for some time.
West Rome: playing as West Rome is hard, but not impossible. Basically, you need to fight a fighting retreat in the south, even giving up Syracuse. Hold the line against the Huns, Visigoths, Burgundians, Vandals, Ostrogoths, and Franks. Once you bribe the Mauretania and/or the Egypt-Nasamones forces arrive, the southern flank will be secure. They may even attack Iberia and fight the Visigoths. Use this momentum to counterattack in the north. If you have a quick general like Anthony, you can send him early to ransack enemy cities.
East Rome: Easier than its western counterpart mostly because you don't have to fight too many nations. In the east, you have Armenia as a buffer against the White Huns while waiting for the Sasanian Empire to enter the war and fight the White Huns. So your focus is in the west against the Ostrogoths and Huns. You have OP gen Belisarius on an OP 5 stack war chariot, so things shouldn't be too rough. Focus on eliminating the Ostrogoths first, but if Attila and/or the Hun gens appear, concentrate all your generals on them until they die. From then on things should be smooth sailing.
Sasanian Empire: Even easier than its Roman counterparts. The annoying part is how isolated they are from the main battlefields. Also, crap economy. What you should do is build up a small team of your elite gens (cavalry on war elephants is important). Armenia will be on their last legs by the time this happens, so save them from the White Huns. Defend East Rome from Hun naval attacks. Push to the north. Meanwhile, spam cash for the two Romes, especially West Rome. Suebi and Briton too if you can afford them, but if you can't, just let them die and focus on helping West Rome.
Huns: IMO the hardest of them all, but I'm sure many disagree. You're fighting all three major powers at once: West Rome in an attempt to push south, East Rome as you try to save Ostrogoth, and Sasanids as you attack Armenia. Knock out Armenia ASAP. Fund the White Huns so that the Sasanids become their problem, not yours. You'll want to be careful when fighting East Rome: if you amass too many generals in one city, the whole East Rome army will come after you. What you want instead is to place one or two gens near the border to attract some of East Rome's forces, then rally all your forces to crush them. Then charge south to save Ostrogoth. Against West Rome it is more of a defensive affair: bribe Mauretania and send a strong general to kill Briton. The combined Mauretania-Vandal force should at least defeat Suebi before a counterattack from Egypt and Nasamones (see a trend here?) forces them into a stalemate. Nevertheless, your allies should swing east and take care of West Rome. Congrats! Have fun taking care of the rest.
