A common guide for west rome says that you should give up your south front and only defending it against the vandals. It is a safe and good guide overall (it still make u victorious) but what if I say that you dont really have to defend and retreat from the imminent vandal invasion?
In this thread, i will teach you how to win west rome without giving up the south front, in which a risk but with a good reward.
recommended monsters: mammoth, griffin (optional)
First of all, where to put generals.
units where you can put generals on
note: you can also put a general in the heavy infantry marked by =.
put your best cav general in the heavy cav near the ostrogoths, possibly one with a monster.
put your best generals in the other ones.
Second, your route.
Germania / Gallia / Pannonia / Hun front
African front
color code:
recommended route // alternate route // X - areas where you should spam legionaries, javeliners; ! - areas where you spawn the rest of your generals // enemy vandal movements // black = defense
I. vs. Ostrogoths
there goes your two of your best generals + aetius. its main task is to blitz the Ostrogoths so that will be a -1 front for you and thus allowing you to harrass the huns along with the east romans. take advantage of your speed, damage and monsters to destroy them the fastest as possible.
II. vs. Franks and Huns
here you can either: defend or contest the cities on north of you (alternate route). Upgrade military camp of Vindelicorum to lvl 3 so you can spawn one of your generals and as well spam spawning units to support. Personally, I would recomemnd contesting the cities on your north so it allows your enemies to focus on you until the britons arrive and help you destroy the Franks. one most bloodiest fight and somehow hard. Afterwards, use all of those to pour on the Hunnic lands.
III. vs. Burgundians and Visigoths
at the start of the game, build/upgrade the military camps of Genua and Vesontio to lvl 3 (if you have spare money) so you can spawn one general in each and potentially spam units as well to their fronts. Blitz the burgundians as possible, even going to their cities when one of your generals take Massalia. Afterwards, along with the brits and suebi, take the visigoth cities one by one so it can support your spam in other fronts.
IV. vs. Vandals
Spawn one heavy unit for your fastest general (or one good general) in Roma military camp. That, along with the light cavalry will either go to Cirta (recommended route), Carthage (risky route) or Lepcis (alternate route). Remember that the strongest forces of the Vandals are on Carthage. If they ignored you and goes to sicily then good. But if they goes against you, upgrade military camp of Cirta to lvl 3 so you can spam/defend if you have spare money, make your way to Capsa or to Carthage itself and ignore those guys and going away from them while you take their cities in the meantime. There is a risk that you can lose a general, but try not to lose all of it and afterwards you can spam heavy units when you money can allow you to do so. As long as you get Carthage, their demise goes inevitable.
V. Extra notes
You might ask, how can i spam/fight those fronts on the same time? This is the answer. In the first five turns you can spam at Vindelicorum, while you blitz your way destroying the Ostrogoths, and upgrading military camps in process. When you already destroyed the Ostrogoths, you can push pressure to the Huns, allowing you to have more income, and until then you must have pushed or pushing through the Vandals and Gaul. Prioritize spamming against the vandals so when your general/s dies they can take the burden, marching to Carthage in process. When you have more income, you can make more spam against the fronts you are struggling at.
About the pirate: bribe them if you want, not really much change whether or not they go against or with you.
National Technologies: Prioritize philosophy imperial guard consul/governor strategic movement and crane mechanics (obviously)
last note: forced march best strategy
