We have no choice but to defend at the city's edge, don't we?
Enemy hordes receive reinforcements based on kill count / scripted turn triggers. And a simple, tenuous "defence" becomes a straight wipe out. I feel cheated that the enemy can receive two to three waves of nine legions to support them while I have nothing coming my way except for bounties given for the destruction of a full legion.
Those castles at the edges provide good units, but we'll be quickly encircled, outmaneuvered and outflanked if we fight them there.

Those castles at the edges provide good units, but we'll be quickly encircled, outmaneuvered and outflanked if we fight them there. i simply held the central-eastern castle for as long as possible and gave up the north eastern. early on. after that retreating to the city. thats it. as awlays dont kill weak units that surround you. dont wipe them just weaken them. especially not archers that are attacking melee inf. its perfect to not take dmg.
