For whatever reason, some generals with pretty bad skillsets are actually remarkably good. Of course, this means some generals with pretty good skillsets are actually remarkably BAD. Could somebody tell me why that is? Also, I'm just making this so people don't make the same mistakes I did.
Anyways, I'm gonna list out these generals: (By the way, I have a common setup for every unit type, so it's not likely that it's because of the unit configuration.)
The GOOD Generals 1. Olga - Okay, what's going on here? She has a unique weapon, but that doesn't automatically mean she's gonna be a good general. Fully upgraded, she gets +10% melee infantry DMG. That's really about it. Despite this, however, she absolutely destroys. 2. Frederick - See Olga 3. Nevsky - Yeah, I know a lot of people love him. Even without his active, he deals some really good damage. I'd say he's even on par with Richard. His weapon doesn't have a DMG buff, though. So how is he able to pull this off? My guess is as good as yours. (By the way, if you're gonna say that he has Cavalry Tactician and Pole-arm Mastery, just wait until I get to the bad generals.) 4. Melee Cavalry Generals w/ Unique Weapon w/ DMG Reduction - This goes for only some generals, which makes me even more confused. 5. Belisarius - See Olga
The BAD Generals 1. Genghis Khan - That's right. I said it. His active is great! Even if it's not as powerful as I had hoped it would be... His unit DMG though could use some a lot of work. 2. Basil II - Man does the same amount of damage as Wallace. WALLACE. Just think about that. If you wanna know how much damage Wallace does, it's basically just one unit killed per attack. 3. Robert the Bruce - He's a bit better than Basil with slightly more survivability. 4. Charge Cavalry Generals w/ Charge Cavalry Expert - Joan is the only exception since I don't have her, so I can't really judge. But I CAN judge Edward I, Li Jing, and John I Tzimiskes. Man, even Jean de Dunnois does a better job. I'm so incredibly disappointed in these three. 5. Saladin - I don't even want to get started talking about him.

I can't comment on everything but some of these takes are pretty terrible. 1. Genghis is amazing. I run him with Keshig, IBC and Mamluks. With Rapid March Gems and a mobility gem, he is the fastest general in the game at 13. Replace Mamluks with Woad/Ravenna for even quicker movement. Every round he can be manouvered into a spot to fire of his ride and archery ability that is completely broken. Keshig might not be the best sponge for heavy hits but his combat ability is still that of a powerful archer. Definitely a recommendation from me. 2. Basils combat prowess relays on Varangians. In campaign when he isn't a priority placement he will oftentimes remain on the bench for me. But when paired with his unique troop, he can be very powerful. 3. Saladins abilities might not be the most suited for archery, but when utilized in a full archer setup he still outperforms many of his contemporarys. His special ability allows him to be more survivable then comparable generals like Timur. Thus mitigating the necessity to use a Tent on him. When coupling IBC, Mamluks and Mongolian Raiders with a lvl. 3 Rhino and a mobility gem, he can keep dishing out continues attacks from dangerous positions. 4. I agree that the charge cav expert is a meh skill. If it gave extra damage on charge I would grade it out much higher. But the extra charge becomes pointless on high morale templars. 5. Can't judge Frederick or Belisarius because I don't have their unique weapons and I assume you used these when making your evaluation of these generals. The bad opinion here might stem from the fact that f2p players will not have access to these. Generals without unique weapons can generally be ignored.

Yeah, I forgot the clarify the unique weapon situation. Sorry about that.
I also use general's respective units so it can't be that they're not equipped with them.
Anyways, in response to some things you said, I might try that out with Genghis Khan. Maybe that'll get him to be the destroyer I'd hoped him to be. I can't figure out if Mongolian Raiders are better or if Mamluks are. As for Saladin though...I just really don't like his active like at all. I personally don't think it gives him any survivability or advantage because of how miniscule the buffs are. Maybe I'm just not using it right.

These are some of the worst takes I have seen, probably worse than my take of how Su Dingfang is best used on ranged units. Olga: she's only good with her alt skin and original better as a consul than an offensive general. Her power is not that good. Frederick Barbarossa: I have his weapon and he is completely useless. His one job is giving other gens free Jet Black, especially as many other melee cavalry gens do his job better. Nevsky is on par with J1T in terms of how good I think each of them are (I think both suck). Nevsky has slightly more damage but is way frailer, even with armor. Li Jing is superior than J1T for skills, and I run one melee cavalry on Edward I and Li Jing because of how useless charge cav expert is. Joan of Arc is pure charge cav for me. Belisarius is great with weapon but mediocre without. Without weapon just run varangian/hengdao. I always thought Basil II was a weak melee infantry general, really needs high morale to function well. Robert the Bruce is a brutally efficient spam cleaner, good survivability and has solo'd some targets in some of the hardest missions. You probably did not put enough into him as he fells units very frequently.

I'm curious about your setup for Robert the Bruce. I don't know what I'm doing wrong with him. I initially gave him the Imperial Spired Helmet and Imperial Lamellar Armor. To me, his unit does provide more survivability, but it duns down the damage significantly. At least that's what I think.
As for the other generals, I can agree with some of your takes, but not sure about Olga being weak. My experience with her makes her a great general. Either that, or I was really lucky and she did well all those times I've used her.
Barbarossa is good for his role. I know he'll never be on par with the likes of Richard I. He can't even dream of it. He's just a support general, and thus, somebody to mop up nearby units while accompanying my generals. But I really think he does okay in this field. I don't need him to kill three units every single turn. He has his moments, though. He can take out one and half legions, which is pretty sufficient. I'm just acknowledging he's not as bad as people normally let on. If I'm being real honest, he can enter my main generals club even without his support ability.

I just use robert the bruce with infantry tactician helmet and swift rapier for more damage. I would say Olga is more a consul because of her 2 good consul skills. And as for Barbarossa, I don't think he is bad, but I do not use him because he just gets completely outclassed by other melee cav gen like Gao Xianzhi and Yelu Dashi.
