I've been toying around with the gem setups of each general. I'm currently working on Olga, and using Siege of Calais as a basis for damage. I've tried giving her +10% Melee Infantry DMG with three different weapons. So in theory, that'd add up to be 30%, right? Then I send her out and she does, I kid you not, 480 damage. What is going on here? Then, I remove all her gems and give her a damage buff for her special unit. Weirdly enough, her damage is now up to 800. As my final test, I remove all her gems to test out her base damage. THEN SHE DOES 1200 DAMAGE. Can somebody tell me how gems work?

Sounds interesting Could you give details of equipment and gem set up for each scenario you mention? Also, just to make sure, you are doing the same attack on the same troop in the same place for each test, right? Ie after doing a single attack test you restart the mission every time.

Normally, unless your troop has and triggers charge/detour, or is ranged, it will only hit the first enemy unit. I think that was what happened. On your other case, it did trigger charge and thus it allowed to hit more troops, thus showing higher damage.
You not understanding the game mechanics doesn't mean the numbers are wrong. Charge/detour are chance base, and they will show an icon briefly if they activated.

For a bit more information, I was using Olga (w/ her unique weapon along with Helmet from the North and Swift Rapier) attacking the first left-most unit at the start of the mission. No outside buffs were given to her, and she always attacked from the same grid. You guys were right about the charge. But was it just bad luck that she dealt as little damage as she did those past few runs?

The game mechanic is, Gems buff for Melee Inf DMG only count once, so in the first case, your bonus is only 10%, in the second case, maybe you get her unique weapon at level 10 and the buff is 20% for the whole party if she has just one squad of Two Handers. The third case, as others said, it’s the Charge made different. For the most DMG, Olga should have three different squads, and has gem boosting DMG for those three units. Strange enough, if you give her a gem boost +10% DMG to Two Handers, together with the unique weapon +20% DMG to Two Handers, they add up to 30% approximately.

The best setup to get the most DMG for Olga, in theory, is: Two Handers+Vanrangie+Janissarie. With her unique item level 10 and the two gold weapons Nordic Helmet+Swift Rapier (and you have Black Prince to make sure those golden weapons have 3 gem slots). Those weapon should have all gems level 5 to boost Inf Tactician, Janissarie DMG, and Varangie DMG (we need 5 Inf gems, 2 DMG increase gems, 1 Cav gem and 1 Morale gem, all level 5). The total bonus is: +168 Inf Capability, +40% unit DMG (gems buff and unique weapon), +15% DMG (Swift Rapier and 2 red gems), +20%DMG for Melee Inf (her skill and the gem buff Inf Tac), -6% DMG received (Helmet). It’s sum up +168 capability and +75%DMG

Hengdao will probably be more useful instead of Janissary. 1) mountain movement. 2) they are t6 unit and their 5th skill will most likely be better.
