which are the only units we should care developing?

It depends, on the generals you have.
You can’t reach max use if developing units that not specials of generals.
But for f2p, we should focus on the tier 6 units only of each type, or at least tier 5.
Melee Inf: Hengdao, or Varangie, or both.
Defense Inf: Lombardy Halberdiers, and one of those have Chase, to pare with Ranged Inf.
Melee Cav: one of those tier 6 (favor Sepulcher or Black Armor Guard), and Camel Riders.
Charging Cav: Jet Black.
Ranged Inf: one of those tier 6 (favor Conquistador), and Woad Riders.
Ranged Cav: IBC.

arent templars and nobles more useful?? also I am on chp 10 yes they are if you have gens. and noble was very important but the game evolved so much... therefore if you pick a charge cav tier 5 it should be boyars for nevsky over noble... |

i will just give a list as well. for f2p. if you have poh or iaps different story.
often i list the best and than a secondary cheap unit type that gives lots of fragments and easy to upgrade and kinda stays relevent for the game
defense inf: lomabrdy; scottish bc cheap
melee inf: varangian and hengdao, swordsmen bc cheap
melee cav: armored guard cav, unlock hospitallers for utility
charge cav: jet black, boyars (if nevsky), noble (only if already lots invested there)
ranged inf: woad as priority + cheap, ravenna as 2nd cheap one bc its decent, longbowmen possibly bc of 100yearswar campaigns.
ranged cav: ibc
*the game changed a lot since early threads and recommendations and now advanced players often are upgrading everything but it takes forever of course...

i got alfred so I guess nobles are fine?
also about to get hengdao so thats done.
should we try to get conqistadors?
are teutonic knights good or are hospitallers better?

Well, if it was last year so yes you should focus on nobles, for now, Lijing with Jet black is better than Alfred with Nobles, and Alfred with Jet black is not a bad idea, any Charge Cav Gen with Jet Black should be a devastating force to be reckoned with. And about Conquistador, I favor that unit for El Cid, and I spent many Raid tickets to get them, but if you have not spent any raid ticket anywhere, don’t get Conquistador, El Cid should be good with Woad Riders, or IBC, or even 3 Varangie is good. |

The tricky thing with Jet Black is that the only way to unlock is Li Jing and raid tickets. I've got my Noble Cav up to lvl 17, but I admit it seems they are starting to lack something in endgame, so maybe I still have my work cut out for me.
Are Lombardy Halberdiers so much better than Legion Spearmen? I've got Legion Spearmen up to lvl 14, and on paper they still seem less powerful than my lvl 20 Phalanx Pikemen, but I haven't done much field testing yet.
I will chime in on IBC though, Timur with decent level IBC is a revelation.

But, Rob the Bruce has Lombardy as his special unit and I don’t have PoH to use Belisarius with Legion Spearman, others should be good with any. And, if you spent so much resources already to get Legion Spearman level 17, and Lombardy at low level like 6, you should keep upgrading Legion Spearman, as they both are tier 4, not much different, and the role of Defense Inf is not that important in great battles, I think. |
