Could You guys advise what are the generals that are important to upgrade almost for sure?

The hardest missions are usually the last three, more or less, so just upgrade the required generals for those. Maybe you can go cheap on some of the weakest, like Conrad, James Wolfe and Henry, they weren't really useful.

From easiest to hardest I'd rank the trials like this: Teotihuacan, Kazan, Patras, Isle of Man.

Then gear it in badge slots, and use it like a second active skill. You probably can watch Iron Duke video above of how he uses it.
