Requirements:
- Being VERY lucky.
- Using Justinian with 150 Administration points as Consul. (He had 3× Administration gems, so the skill probably helped.)
Strategy / What happened:
Phase 1 - Last Stand:
- I sent my two starting units to the south. Originally, I sought to retake Negev and open a path through the horde to take some other cities, preferably Clysma (the coastal city with a castle).
- The general was defeated in an enemy round and Negev fell again. The other retreated to defend Jerusalem.
- I upgrades homes to accommodate my population at the start, as well as my iron production. Eventually, the city was upgraded to lvl 4.
- I bought the Policy for movement across deserts and recruitment cost discount for archers(?).
As we can see, the HRE Crusaders did not show up on Turn 12, as we commonly observe. A hint here may be the fact that Jerusalem still resides in Christian hands and/or the Kingdom of Jerusalem still stands. With luck and the deployment of our first two units to assit, Jerusalem (with reference to both) still stands.
Phase 2: A New Crusade
- Our current strategy, as expected, is to survive. We'll stay on the defensive while our Christian allies assemble and begin their counterattack.
1. The HRE will assist Byzantium to overrun the Sultanate of Rum and expand deeper into the Middle East.
2. Armenian Cilicia will hold the line against the Zengids and some of the Anatolian Beylik troops, and expand into Rum's rear.
3. The French will assist the English in taking over Egypt and defeat the Ayyubids.
- As a result of good fortune, I had the chance to profit from being asked by both Georgia and the Eldiguzids to declare war on each other.
- I developed all of Tripoli's facilities to withstand multiple Zengid-Ayyubid attacks. Eventually, the two will turn on one another, making it easier to survive and prepare to expand.
French Crusaders entered the fight.
English Crusaders disrupted Ayyubid attempts to continue the attack against the rest of the Outremer (Crusader states).
By swapping between one to two garrison units and the new scripted general for Tripoli, I was able to withstand enemy assaults, even though the Zengids overran Antioch and sent many troops my way.
Phase 3: Tripoli Strikes Back
- With the arrival of two new friendly states, one of which would have landed by now, we have enough firepower to overrun the Muslim states.
- The Christian counterattack in Anatolia halts and begins to reverse Rum's expansion. Cilicia manages to survive Zengid's attacks and even begins to push back against the nearby cities.
- With the Zengid-Ayyubid conflict, as well as existing Ayyubid preoccupation with the English and Kingdom of Jerusalem, Tripoli has a change to expand in strength towards Damascus and Palmyra.
I finally attack Damascus on Turn 31, my National Policies as of Turn 33, and my capture of Damascus, after much resistance, on Turn 36.
Phase 5: Return of European Rule
- After taking our first province with a castle, deploy your best general from the Tavern. It's time to fight back.
- My preference is to send Timur, my best gen, northward. In my run, the Crusaders experienced success in holding out and overruning the Ayyubids, so a few legions of cav to assist will suffice. More importantly, the Zengid-Beylik threat remain and the Abbasids can only do so much to contain the Eldiguzids.
Sending a few cav units into Anatolia will hasten the defeat of the Sultanate of Rum and allow for cities to be taken from enemies or stolen from allies.
The Seljuks are in position to engage, but a few turns later, the Abbasids will rise up or we'll ally with them and invite them to our war.
Defeating the Seljuks is the last major obstacles. With enough resources, the Cuman-Kipchaks and Eldiguzids can be allied with.
