I noticed that melee cavalry generals never get the spotlight. Are they obsolete? Should I still have a melee cavalry general in my roster?
Also, what is the best melee cavalry general for f2p and p2w?

Their use has been varied. The thing is, they have Detour, not Charge. Charge applies the flat dmg to all units in a legion, but Detour seemingly applies it to the last.
I use Alfred and Belisarius as my main melee cav gens. IMO, the most ideal would be a combination of the skills for cav dmg up, melee cav dmg/detour up, perhaps knight or single-handed sword dmg up, and the legion moves as fast as the fastest unit.

My two best melee cavalry generals are Roland and Murad the Second. Both are usually deployed at the start of challenge conquests and are quite useful in this mode of the game. Murad is an excellent general, btw. Even without special weapon and unit.

After unlocking unit talents, I think, mixed legions are more valuable in challenge conquests now. So, such generals as Lancelot and Stephen can be extremely useful too. Unfortunately, Stephen's active skill is somewhat lame.

The reign of melee cav comes now, with talent system. They have highest overall stats of all unit types, great lvl 4 atk buff and insane tier 5 unit (Knight of Garter). I can't say what unit is strongest among melee cav units but for battle the most needed is KoGarter (maxed talents) and the other one you need to invest is Teutons (you need to unlock its lvl 5 talent to get lvl 4 atk upgrade which give much buff for melee cav units), BAG still keeping its important role as before . P/s: the lvl 4 atk of melee cav doesn't stack (+20 def and may be - because I can't check - DMG reduction), only applied once even we use triple melee cav legion.

Well that is surprising to hear. I literally dont use them for a long time now and didnt plan to. Maybe i should reconsider. But i had totally closed the book on any interest of upgrading them even if gen and weapon were f2p. Yeah murad 2 is nice. Thinking bout stripping nevsky of all gems and items and just using murads skill. And possibly buying another silver calmness gen to follow him around like subutai. ( But that is also a sad tactic to be honest.)

I'm waiting the arrival of Suleiman. He'll be a magnificent addition to my team. Quite literally.

I don't even make attempts to complete challenge conquests as 1* country somewhere in the middle of the board. Hopeless...

So with a little silver and iron stealing you can easily get rid of 4-5 potential enemies.
And I don't know yet about mercenary units but scout cav is a really useful unit for conquest challenge; the first three talent upgrades are a must.
I'm using them for all my rapid march boosted generals, supporters that are deployed after the initial swordsmen only phase and specialists such as Edward III, Baldwin and Yelu Dashi.
