just wanted to know whether we should upgrade the troop strength or general strength through coins and whether we should use gold to increase the speed at which we upgrade the troop strength.

You should consider both.
In campaigns, gens are more important because they are single, powerful units meant to force a breakthrough and meet objectives.
In conquests, units scattered around the map must face other enemy units. As the enemy is more capable of spamming troops, your gens need strong support to force a breakthrough.
Don't use Medals to pay for coins. Never worth it. You need them for gens and gen upgrades.
