Which lineup do you want to go for first?
Atilla is good to set up a cav lineup and works in others.
I don't think there's anyone good for inf or cav at the moment.
Be sure to try to get those free gens in Empire first. They're not necessarily the best, but they do help.

For the "main story" (campaigns), you'll want a team heavily focused on one unit. For now, you don't need to worry about that. My suggestion is waiting and buying Nobby when you are in empire age. He's one of the best gens in the game, even with the new p2w gens.
