We need to hit 5 targets in 5 directions (central, west, north, north-northeast, and northeast) and overcome a massive defence force with only 3 units (one mixed inf-archer legion, 1 mixed cav legion, and Castle Basil II).
How do we even fight and win in time?

You're gonna be surprised how many times I used drums here I separated The three armies and killed all the mobile ones before moving to each point By gods the drums I used It's annoying

Crowd control: Murad II and Subutai are the key. Their active skills melt the enemies away.
I guess the tank alternative (90%+ damage reduction... got it on Michael VIII) could also work well, but didnt try.

We need to hit 4 targets. The west is hidden behind troops with the defensive behaviour, and three need to be stormed almost consecutively.

How do we even fight and win in time? It’s a stupid stage… they don’t let us use any of our own merc troops. The only archer troop provided is the crappy byzantine bombers which were released very recently and thus are low level. What’s the point of this update when everything requires drum spam?..

I finally cleared Normal without Drums, using low-level new Byzantine troops.
As per the above: There are "border" guards who move to attack when you are too close to them (2-hexes away), but they will not take your cities. These are positioned at the edges of provinces. Murad and Subutai are very good for tearing down enemy formations ASAP.
Avoid the rush of the mobile troops and take the central city. I positioned Murad toward the centre of the western border guards so the northernmost unit tried to envelop him, but Subutai defeated it and let Murad through. Basil took the city and fought off the mobile troops who returned.
Murad barely survived taking the western city. Subutai headed for the N, then NNE city. Basil attacked the NE city.
