Detouring is the ability to hit the last unit in a legion (rightmost). It's not as good as Charge which hits all units and, IIRC, deals the same dmg to each unit.
Ie. If your unit dealt 123 points of dmg, Detour should make the last unit take 123 points of dmg. However, Charge applies 123 points to each unit in the whole legion (all units individually take 123 dmg).
Do you mean active skills that transfer units like Frederick Barbarossa's? If Frederick has more than 1 unit in his legion (2 or 3 units) and an allied legion has less than 3 units in that legion (2 or 1), Frederick can "give" the allied legion his leftmost unit. Additionally, even if that unit was not in good shape (eg. 1 hp left), upon transfer, it will be at full strength.

I think he means the transfer units like templar sergeant. And as for them, you basically unlock new unit by paying the price for it. You can still use both versions. However, the new unit kind of counts as the original, meaning that gel combo increasing templar's damage also works on sergeant.

Notice: in late game with high lvl units, detour is even better than charge because it doesn't active counter of def inf even when it combine with charge (you will see big icon of detour and that attack will deal damage to all 3 enemy units).
