Save/load. Basically, you save the game before you make an attack. Then you make the attack. If the result is displeasing, you load up the save and try again, as many times as you like, until you get the best result the unit can deliver.

Here is a thread on the damage-output formula. european-war-4.boards.net/thread/1368/output-formula-skill-analysis The full formula is quite complex, but if you take the basics of it and when you get a bit of experience under your belt, you can get a feel for how much damage you should be dishing out as a best result. Doing a "speed-run" (i.e. trying to complete a conquest in as few game turns as possible) with full save-load for every attack is extremely time-consuming in the real world and requires a lot of patience, but can be very rewarding.
