I've restarted the game a few weeks ago and here is my current progress so far.
I completed half of cold war hard, im on the modern war campaign now, did all conquests except 1980. 1600 medals atm, with guderian half upgraded skills, leeb, messe, roko, rommel, arnold. I have maxed tank and near maxed air + missile tech - im trying to farm 1980 soon to get resources for invasion wonders + more tech.
I will eventually get konev at some point but I want to have a strong final lineup so i can do the new events to get ribbons etc as well as frontier. I remember in my last run i didn't have leeb, and i had donitz in addition to my current lineup. I was wondering if i should get donitz again since im using horton/arnold for naval invasions atm, idk if navy is required for events. I know it helps in frontier.
I want to save my medals to upgrade my tank generals's skills and maybe konev too.

Warzone and frontier become a lot easier when you have 2 navy generals. So far, none of the events required any admirals.

That is try to go as far as possible with your team until you get stuck and then make adjustments which let you overcome the current obstacle.
Yamashita is convenient for daily invasions and adding explosives makes destroying fortresses in frontier a lot easier, but 2 updates have happened since then, maybe you can do it without. More tank generals help with war zone, but for farming, steel war zone is enough. Which means, unless getting 3 stars for doom is on your immediate to do list, having 5-6 tanks is also no priority. My experience with the last four events has been that resource enhancing generals make them more manageable, so Dowding and Yamamoto (or Arnold, Nimitz, Tito/Tassigny depending on how much slots dedicated to resources/air you want and how much medals are spent) could be interesting options.

This is off topic but which country in 1980 is the best for farming resources? I did turkey in my last run but not sure if this is optimal. Also I already have Arnold as my air general so I don’t know if I should replace with dowding for economy bonus who I think is inferior to arnold because no rumour.

I find conquest farming a bit too time consuming (so no experience there), imo doing daily tasks is a lot more efficient. And Arnold is among the "good" generals, so why not try to get as far as possible with him? Once you can say with certainty that not having economic expert is the reason for being stuck, then it's time for Dowding
