So I bought gustavus because I was curious about his skills but never bothered to upgrade him much. He's basically at 5 star with 1 1 1 skills. Should I put the time into maxing him?

Well, how should I say this... Well, to put it bluntly, you have to upgrade and improve all valuable generals of your team, let alone IAP guys Obviously, you can postpone upgrading his third skill. But first two are just OP. To place Leadership debuff (the best debuff in the game!) without being counterattacked and dealing damage of a legendary weapon with a guaranteed critical attack - what a you waiting for? Top priority, I have no doubt about it...

Maybe I'm not doing something right. First of all upgrade his Leadership to lvl 10. It is one of the cheapest skills to upgrade, yet, as I said, it is one of the best skills. Try to use him against tough bosses and fortifications. At lvl 6 he gets his ability to attack without retaliation back. So, you can place Leadership debuff on creatures like Zeus, Hades and such without being counterattacked. Leadership will cripple their attacking potential by half almost indefinitely! And since Artillery has a special bonus against fortifications his active skill can destroy the most formidable fortifications just in seconds. Just to see how useful he might be put him on your first team (somewhere behind the front-line) in NT1 or NT2 and watch

On 6 stars he gains the fire perk. I do remember an FB post from old yuanzhong some time ago complaining he was not worth it so ...

Well, one question is whether he is worth the money they are demanding for him. Completely another question is whether he is a good general. I can't answer the first one, since I don't buy IAP generals usually, but answering the second question I would say: "he definitely is a good general" I don't think he is any worse than other IAP guys.

So I should go with the idea of would he should fill a role that I demand out of him (say leadership support for the last level of World War) or just be there to be a collection item (but then again I don't have Achilles) But honestly he's been quite decent just need to use items to pump up that crit damage stat to make him do tons of damage.
