Hey all,
It's been ages since I properly contributed to this forum. I used to be an active person back in the day and I've recently picked up on EW4 after ages, and I have some new wisdom to share. I'd also love to do a generals ranking so I'm combining the two here - hope it helps for those who still play EW5 - arguably my favorite mobile strategy game. I don't expect to stay here again as a regular but I'd hope those would enjoy what I have to share

Some (if not all) have already been covered by others on this forum but I'd like to provide my two cents.

Tactics
Some (if not all) have already been covered by others on this forum but I'd like to provide my two cents.
- Circling - Morale plays a huge role in this game, and it's always been prudent to surround enemies (especially infantry and cavalry) as it softens the retaliatory damage you receive. This gets even better when you're using cavalry units as you can often trigger further drops and best confusion (the question marks). These can paralyze enemies and leave them more vulnerable to extra damage (without retaliation!). Further, even using low-health cavalry units can have a chance at lowering morale and it denies the enemy a chance to improve their morale should they kill the unit otherwise. Mastering this is key to winning a lot of campaigns, and for those speed running conquests.
- Isolate and Strike - In a lot of (especially later-era) campaign missions, you are pressed for time to strike. Forts, cities, and other locations often can be irrelevant and bog you down further, especially when you have to maintain key locations. To that extent, my strategy has always been to deploy line infantry (if you have the money, triple formation) can hold key locations for turns against strong enemies and otherwise continue on striking hard at other locations. Map out a route with your generals doing the heavy lifting and keep moving.
- Forts as distractions - Observed on a lot of occasions, AI often ignores your units in favor of attacking in-progress forts. Use that to your advantage, and buy wooden forts and coastal forts to distract your enemy from attacking your units, which can also be used to help surround and circle said enemies. Whilst it may not fully be the case with key locations, they still provide a relief opportunity for low-health units to escape from further attack. This has helped me a lot in campaign missions, and helped with the isolate and strike strategy
- Seize the means of (food) production - Seizing farms not only gain food for your economy, but also benefits generals that get nobility boosts from the capturing of locations and can trigger starvation of the enemy. Whilst starvation is mainly a conquest strategy, I have seen it work marvellously in some campaign examples like War of Glory, where you essentially have a free hand in attacking confused enemies and winning with ease. So seize those farms!
- Don't be afraid to kamikaze - Often it is understandable if you don't want to lose a valuable unit that is running dangerously, but don't be hesitant to use them. They can provide as a nice distraction, can trigger morale drops if the unit is cavalry, and you can focus on other units. This works extremely well for generals with mass fire, who can deal a ton of dmg as they go down fighting. So don't be stingy with preserving all your units, utilize them to tactically inflict large dmg.
- Movement is King - Movement stars are very effective, and upgrading them can be the difference of achieving Victoria or achieving Isabella instead in a conquest. Lots of movement can allow generals to sometimes traverse fast enough to capture undefended cities, and combined with Warhorse/Geography - you can probably start at Russia and reach Lisbon in 10 turns. Damage isn't everything, but also how fast you can reach your targets to deal that damage. There is a reason why everyone fanboys/girls over Berthier.
