In 1812, Spain is a 2-star country allowing all 6 generals and is RED.
(I am using the term Minor Nations here because the Spanish sector on this map is much larger than many of the "small nations" in the Euro maps.)
Allies are RED: Indians, Great Britain, Hessen
Enemies are BLUE: US, France, Russia, Netherlands
Starting resources 100 gold, 40 wrenches, 1980 food
Geography: The Spanish sector is located in the far southwest corner of the map. The western and southern borders are formed by the map's hard edge and are safe.
Your borders are all with hostile sectors: Russia to the north, France to the northeast, USA to the southeast.
There are no bridges into the Spanish sector, so even a fast enemy unit will be held up for one turn at your border.
The river that forms your northern and eastern borders is joined where it bends south by the confluence of two rivers coming down from the north. To the west of these two rivers is Russian territory, in the middle is Indian territory, and to the east is the French sector.
Cities:
Level 1 (3 gold) on the border with Russia, empty at the start.
Level 4 (trading post) (20 gold, 2 wrench)
L1 Stable (2 gold)
L1 Artillery factory (4 wrench)
2 x developed farms (total 80 food)
1 x undeveloped farm (total 15 food) = 95 food
Defences:
In the north next to the L1 city, a medium fort.
In the south, east of the artillery factory, a large fort
In the northeast corner where RU, FR, ESP meet, a wooden fort
UNITS:
1 x double light artillery (consumes 10 food/turn)
Triple grenadier (15 food) with BALLESTEROS (98/5, 3inf 2cav 2 mov 1 tr)
Double heavy cav (14 food) with JOYES (74/7, 2 inf 2 cav, 2 trade, 1 mov)
1 x single heavy artillery (5 food)
1 x double line infantry (10 food)
Total consumption of starting units = 54 food
PROBLEMS:
There are two French generals (Perignon, Jourdan) and one Russian (Bennigsen) who are in a position to attack you immediately. They are all stronger than yours, on better units, and Bennigsen has Assault Art. However, Perignon is PROBABLY going to be attacked by Kahia (who is nearby and is your ally).
ASSETS:
You have the facilities to create all of the land warfare units.
You have your own trading post to assist with the economy and don't need to worry about capturing one.
Russia, to your north, is as surrounded by enemies as you are, one of which is first-class (UK)
You have a large stock of food which can be exchanged for gold and wrenches at once, as you generate enough per turn to feed your starting units.
In a prolonged achievement-grinding contest, there is ample scope to turn both the British and the Indians neutral, paralyze them and finally turn them hostile to farm them once you eliminate your declared enemies.
SUGGESTIONS:
The idea behind playing Spain for the advanced player is to take advantage of being able to place a full allocation of six princesses or generals, for combat grinding. I put Sophia and Isabella on the starting artillery and used them to destroy Bennigsen, Jourdan and Perignon. Once this was done, I had a free hand to send forces into Russia, capturing facilities and significantly strengthening my economy before moving east to crush France and take on the US.
Netherlands does not have a land foothold on this map, and is frequently destroyed before it can come ashore. The one thing to ensure as you advance toward completion is to capture or steal a port and destroy all naval units. Fortunately, the sea area on this map is rather small and any units hiding in the corner do not take much time to catch.
That being said, I tried it with only the starting units and no princesses or generals. It was touch-and-go at first, but I managed to eliminate all of France except the fortress and all of Russia by turn 51 (4808/2672/8982). By turn 70, I had 9999 gold and food and was essentially undefeatable unless I chose to throw it away.
