I gave him four stars at first, but the more I use him, the more I believe he is and will be even more in future, a clear five star general.
I managed to collect half of his equipment set and have started getting more stars on him, and the difference can definitely be felt in both his normal attacks and his skill.
Just like Motonari, due to his skill lvl. +1 set bonus, he will be able to reach lvl 5 on his active, which I think will start adding up.
Also, his unit is obviously very good, and will become better as we get the chance to upgrade it further, so I definitely think Date will be a top-tier general in the long run.

For a melee general, it would be great, but it's dependent on terrain and it's generally not hard to use a teppo general without getting counterattacked anyway. Good at night, sure, but we have rather few night battles and most aren't too difficult. |

You're heavily incetivized to give him kills, in which the enemy doesn't counterattack anyway. And he's good at that because he does huge damage on the Mounted Teppo. And I don't think that avoiding those counterattacks that he does take meaningfully increases his survivability anyway. I have him at 2* and deploy him with the free tavern deploy in challenge conquests and he has no problem staying alive without a healing item.
It doesn't hurt to have though, it's not like it makes him have worse damage output or anything over other teppo guys because I don't think anyone's better than him on the mounted teppo anyway.
One thing I will mention is pretty nice about him is that he moves full speed through forests. Very helpful, that makes him one of my fastest guys and movement speed is hugely important imo.

Pretty much Archers are annoying, that and you can play aggressive with Date, get close in and just hit folks, also places tend to have either mountains or forests, so yeah you're getting that often |

Yes, but: 1) when possible, you want to score a kill on his first hit, which means no counterattack, 2) you have melee units to take out archers, and there's not usually a shortage of targets for Date, 3) terrain dependent - you usually have terrain available, but you may not in the places you'd really want to use it - most likely sieging a city defended by an archer general. On the other hand, this is a situation where the ability could be really valuable if you do have the terrain. 4) you really can afford to take some counterattacks, especially since damage isn't reduced by low health (although mine doesn't generally get low). Is it useless? No, it gives you more options, but in general you have enough options to use him effectively without it and other ways to solve the problems that it solves. |

So, at lvl 4 Date's active skill has 4 turns cooldown. Quite likely lvl 5 will increase the damage to 60%.  That provides us with several good options for how to equip him with a f2p stuff: 1. "Tenka Fubu" complete set. His active remains at lvl 4. But we can use it more frequently. Downside: 2 items (an armor and a horse) don't add too much to his overall performance. 2. "Tenka Fubu" 2 items (a sword and a scroll) and his own set (an armor and a horse). We can unlock lvl 5 of his active skill eventually. We can increase two of his skills albeit not the best ones. 3. "Tenka Fubu" 2 items (a sword and a scroll... yes, again, just because they are too good) and "3 days reign" 2 items (an armor and a horse). In terms of his overall damage it is probably the most powerful combination. We increase his adaptability, critical damage by another 25%, and one of his most important skills. His scroll purchased for bb isn't bad either. But the key words here are "purchased for bb" and we lose 8% critical rate if we use it instead of Tenka Fubu scroll. |

Thanks to information about lvl 5 of his active skill it is possible to say with confidence that best f2p sets for Date are these two:
1. 2 items of "Tenka Fubu" and 2 items of "One-eyed dragon".
2. 2 items of "Daughter of the Lightening god" and 2 items of "Tenka Fubu".
