I am not sure that speed fully compensate the overall mediocrity of current skins of Hideyoshi...
First of all, conquests are only one part of the game. It is nice to deploy a fast general in conquests but it is of limited value elsewhere.
Then, we have other fast generals (though some time is needed to unlock these skills) with better abilities than Hideyoshi has. Hojo and Kikkawa to mention (for example, Hojo on DoP covering long distances or Kikkawa Motoharu on Horse Archers).
I would argue that a f2p version of Hideyoshi is seriously underwhelming in comparison to his p2w version. You can't complete his set, you don't have his bond ( well, technically we have one that is f2p, but I can't recall when I deployed Nene last time ). Hopefully his new skin will change it. Otherwise I will keep him in the vault most of the time.
Not to mention that cavalry is faster in general and the fastest unit Elite cavalry is available almost everywhere (and its abilities are well suited for fast moving). And Nagitana cavalry (the second fastest unit) is available literally everywhere and sometimes it is also possible to get an early access to Horoshu cavalry.
And we have plenty of good Cavalry generals including blue tier like Takeda Katsuyori or Obu Toramasa.
Truth be told, I prefer to deploy my Obu Toramasa to Hideyoshi on every single day
Highly doubtful that Hideyoshi will ever reach such high Valor stats as some blue tier cavalry generals can.
I personally don't think you're giving Hideyoshi enough credit. His unfinished set, while not crazy, still is good at keeping the guy alive by reducing counterattack damage. Sure, his valor isn't as good as Nobutsuna or Toramasa, but it still is high enough to hit decently hard on castle walls. And Hideyoshi has an affinity with elite samurai, which is a solid damage-dealing unit and the best we have right now for infantry. His stats are still good and can make up for his milquetoast abilities.
I'll give you the point on cavalry though which just shows how unbalanced the unit classes are. Cavalry just has the speed and the damage that infantry has more trouble getting.
Oh, and the reason I'm focusing on conquest is because challenge conquest seems to be the most difficult thing we have in this game, minus some real gimmicky stuff in Tenkabito like Kokura or trying Kimotsuki without the necessary firepower. Sure, it's only one part of the game, but it's a big part of the game for resources. And there's nothing stopping you from using your conquest team elsewhere, where mobility is maybe not so important but still nice to have.
Anyway, I'm hoping too that his skillset continues to improve with his evolution. I remember his first skin had an almost completely useless active since if a unit is going below 15% health, most likely they'll die (and you have to estimate correctly to kill them using Kinoshita's skills), and his second is a definite improvement. It'll definitely make a Hideyoshi user like me happy.
