So, I wanna take a more unconventional general path (willing to farm as much as necessary). And so, I'm wondering, are there any generals that are simply a requirement to complete the game? Obviously I'm not gonna pick the most garbage generals, but I will be taking perhaps less optimal ones.

For EW6, I wouldn't say any general is necessary to beat the game. All the best generals have alternates that while they might not be as good or as well of a price performer, they still can get you through campaign. And since you're willing to farm as much as necessary, then price just isn't an issue. EW6 eased a bit on the difficulty ET was notorious for beforehand - it's still not a complete walk in the park but it leaves itself open for new players pretty well. So you don't need the best to beat Roman Unification, although it might take you a bit longer to do it.

For Crimean war I think that aura generals are necessary. For the campaign, maybe you can do it without them.

Ah, Crimean War. How did I forget about that? Maybe I just wanted to forget about it But yeah, as blueberry said that's probably the exception to the rule. So if you want to do all the challenge stages, aura generals are a must, but if you just wanna beat campaign then I think you can pull it off.

Thanks to everyone who answered (good to see some life on this forum ) I guess that means I have to get Murat (bleh) and either Mahmud or Alex III (bleh). Ah well... Honestly, EW6 1914 had far more freedom of choice, and practically lots of other games as well.

Also, I know that maybe I should start a different thread, but how does aura work? Because I can't find any threads about this. I know it stacks, but say if you get 1 arty general; a 30+ damage boost doesn't seem like much (BTW it's on themselves too right?) I don't understand its importance...

In this game, the aura overlaps, so a single gen and unit can gain a large boost when moving together.
