So a couple of weeks ago I posted a thread including a poll with the question how you gonna spend your medals. My conclusion was to fully invest it in general upgrade.. I still think its worthy and almost got angel at max lvl 10.
moreover, i am almost at 100 arena wins and get 500 green chips while all my units are already max (since introduction of extra pvp increased Green chip income significantly), so I dont think you should use medals for buying chips....
I am still doubting of using medals to get special compartments for upgrading attack of my special units... But did not use it..
now I fought against a player who did not invest in above things (or not completly) but used medals for getting core and building big shields and thereby kicking my *Auto corrected*... This can be a greatfull strategy also (depends on what the next stap will be in the upgrade with regards on the allien campains)
