I think one big area of gameplay overlooked is using stars to upgrade units at the beginning of a new campaign.
I first fell in love with this concept upgrading American militia, but I think it can make a big difference at every level. Generally the cheaper units are the best to upgrade and it's better to upgrade a unit that already has some training stars.
Just curious if anyone else does this.

I'd rather spend the precious medals on my generals. Upgrading a unit means you'll miss out on their hp regen. If you are fine with that then sure.

I'm talking about on the campaign page you have the option to use stars to upgrade units with training bars, or get access to building more units. I don't think more units is that important but building American militia with 3 bars and 6 damage reduction each attack makes a big difference. You can spam them throughout the campaign missions.

I just started the Holy Roman Empire campaign. Light Cavalry start with two bars. Line Infantry and Grenadiers start with one bar. I spent seven stars to upgrade Line Infantry and nine stars to upgrade Grenadiers. For the first mission, I mainly built Light Cavalry, so it was kind of a waste. As I continue the campaign, I will mostly stick to these 3 units.

We are talking about the same thing. Say you upgrade the American militia from lvl 3 to 4 (2 chevrons to 3), you're gonna miss out on that 30 hp regen. Plus trading stars for medals is an important source of medal income.

Plus trading stars for medals is an important source of medal income. If you are talking about a unit that will have a general on it, it's maybe an issue. If you are just spamming single ranks of line infantry (75/5 cost), they seldom either survive long enough or see so much combat that they get to that point. Just spamming light cavalry and line infantry has been working well. It seems like all of the Holy Roman Empire scenarios have a pair of towns Fatima can upgrade for the first few rounds (starting a round on one, upgrading, then move to the other, upgrade, end turn, repeat) and a trading location so you can sell excess iron and food for cash. And yes, it is kind of a waste of medals but to upgrade line infantry was just 7 stars, so 7×4 is 28 medals. Not a big cost by any means. Of course you want to upgrade at the beginning of the campaign so you can use them in every scenario. I already regret the 9 star upgrade for Grenadiers.
