What mostly urks me about the AI is how your allies indefinitely suck no matter what side you're on. I kind of understand why they shouldn't always be completely amazing, but why, can't my British allies actually do something in Europe, or my German allies fight back against the Russian onslaught?

Yeah when I played as the British the Soviets were terrible, the Spanish were amazing and so was Italy, then when I played as Germany the Italians sucked, the Spanish sucked (they even stole Paris when they did nothing helpful) and the Soviets went great.

Yep. Sucks doesn't it? Feel the RNG pain? Well, good. What fun would a game be if your only allies weren't complete garbage...?

IMO, an AI unit will focus on a target, like an alien unit, and will do it until either that target is down/conquered, or the unit itself destroyed. So this includes general-deployed units. And they run into death. Well, one thing is, if you're bored enough, you can create a scenario of you vs. the world by doing nothing until all your allies are down. But it takes veryyy long to reach that point, so up to player.

Just press the Alien conquest, and pick anything not in Middle East or Mediterranean, press the complete turn button and then skip button about 30 times each, you WILL be the last one standing up against the invasion pretty quickly. That's not very long at all

That's why I said anything that's not in the Middle East and Mediterranean. Those areas tends to go down the quickest, so far that I have noticed.

The Middle East normally just ends up being Soviet dominated and some minor Iranian places. Turkey always gets rekt
