First post, but been reading a couple weeks. Great site!
Can you help me with two questions?
1. What does the training skill do for generals? Do they earn experience or rank more quickly? Or is it something used in-game for their troops? 2. What does the button on a unit do that looks like an archery target and costs gold & food? upgrade to that unit just for the game? an upgrade to the general commanding the unit?
Thanks!

Sorry- I wasn't clear enough with my first question. The trainer skills add a star when regrouping, such as artillery trainer. Each general has 8 rated abilities from 1 to 5 stars: Infantry Cavalry Artillery Warship Fort Business Movement Training
I understand the first seven. What does Training do? e.g. what's the difference between a general with one star in training and five stars in training?
Thanks!

When you click a unit commanded by a general with training star(s), you will see a button with archery icon at the bottom of the screen. That button allows you to increase level of the unit (chevron) at the cost of gold and food. The max level that the unit can get with this button equals to number of training star(s) the general has. For example, if the general has 3 training stars, you can use that button until the unit reach level 3 (3 chevrons). I also want to add that the unit regain some HP during the leveling up process so you can use this button as a healing kit. The higher training stars means the more number of times you can regain HP.

How does this rank in importance in the campaign or conquest? Is it advisable to max such units out quickly to help with their deep raids? Or is it one of those things to spend resources on when you have them to spare (e.g. after improving your larger towns and getting new units for all your generals to be deployed)?
I've used it as a heal button in the past, but only intermittently and I didn't understand what caused it to appear. I'm curious if it's something I should focus on more going forward.

I normally only use it to heal my units even though thanks to farming I already have +10HP each turn. But sometimes I use it before going to battle. E.g. when I build a new war ship and put Kate on it to fight someone like Sidney I first upgrade the ship to something like 3 stars

I personally like the 10 (5×2) extra defence very much. Especially on long conquests, your generals are so tough against minor enemy units. And as the higher upgrades are pretty expensive, I pay attention that I do not use it on a general which willl level up automtically on the next kill of two...

I sometimes just use a bunch of weak units to bring a general to 5 experience so he can't heal anymore

Is it possible to increase the number of training stars a general has as I do not see any "Training" trainers?

So Nobunaga Oda, please correct me if I am wrong, but the way I understand it is generals are only able to buy promotions in a battle to the level of stars they have but they can still 'earn' promotions beyond the number of stars they have by attacking or defending. ?
