I just wanted this thread to serve as a non-specific-war thread but still have a place to take a step back and think about designing ANYTHING. Here's a prime example variantbank.org/articles/call_to_arms.htmvariantbank.org/articles/designing_maps.htmforums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=149597Each one of them focus on the concept of how to design a game/map/mod/variant, but it's essential to consider the fundamental questions of game design which those links do address. Here's my concern with so many new games offered as alternatives to the TW chaos... they may end up with the same old issues as the TWs themselves had, so they end up as poor replacements, or worse... introduce a wide slew of salty issues that can come between players because of either: ***Poor game design/set of rules, not fully fleshed out to consider potential issues coming out later, a lack of contingency plans to resolve something, at least a plan devised for an outcome other than in the expected plan. It's best to make things clear and simple but complete and whole if possible. ***Some things are just asking for trouble. Leave it out... if there is such a strong potential for abuse by a player (I'm not even above suspect myself, and please don't assume players won't find out a flaw in the design and use it to benefit them). If you the designer(or GM) really do want a feature, then it better be there in a for good reason to affect the game's flow and maybe... just maybe... try the best and hardest you can to minimize the potential impact of abuses. Either problem comes to one solution: back to the drawing board for a better design. Of course, this isn't always possible to do while on the fly to fix a game in middle of progress. I think we really need a resource of game design to help out in the RP board.
